Site updates update
Posted by Aaron Skinner on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 1:03 PM

Guys,

Here's the latest.

  • You should see page numbers at the top and bottom of post threads.Big Smile
  • The forum software doesn't allow for a pull-down menu for ease of navigation so that will have to remain the same.
  • The post confirmation screen should now return you to where you left off in the thread rather than the first page.
  • Still checking on the sorting and filtering to allow better saving options.

See how that's working now.

Cheers,

Aaron

Thanks for the update Aaron, greatly appreciated.  I'm a designer by trade and have to handle the company website... dealing with website programming may be what drives me to build all those little plastic airplanes!!

Aaron,

Started getting the "out of memory" error again! Not as prevalent as before. I'm wondering if the server is getting overloaded on the weekend. Is the backup starting too early? Something like that?

Gents,

We have had some issues with the Internet connections here today so it's possible these errors are related to that problem. Let's see if they continue after today and go from there.

Cheers, Aaron

One strange thing about this most recent error, is that refreshing the page doesn't clear the error. Only closing the page and opening up a new instance does the trick. With the memory error, refreshing would eventually work. Don't know if that's a clue for the IT crew or not, but it allows me to ratchet up my post count! Smile

I  have been receiving the error message all day. Was the site being updated and I missed the  message.

It's finally back on line. I even tried logging in on my wife's computer thinking I had a problem on mine.

To make it even weirder I was only getting that error on posts I either started or posted in, all the rest were fine. Propeller

Everything seems to be working ok now though.

Sounds like you guys (some of you anyways) had better luck than me - I could not even get into the forum for most of the day yesterday.  I got a BRAND NEW error message that I had never seen before...

On a different note:

Hey Aaron,

In the last few days a lot of folks have commented on how disappointing it is that the front page, while it does show recent posts activity, does not show the forums those threads can be found in.  Again, it is a navigation thing, since some posts might have similar sounding titles, but will attract a different crowd depending on if they are in ships or sci-fi, for example.  Your tech guys added the name of the original and most recent poster, can they add the forum name too?  (Or would that be too much like the 'old way'?) Whistling

Boyd, the site was down for most of the day yesterday, and yes, it was a previously unseen error.

I catch an error every time I come here, refreshing doesn't work, but closing the page and opening it up again works. Mildly frustrating!

That would be handy, I've replied to a few advice type threads (paint problem, glue etc) and sometimes it can be really hard to find them again since they can be in a couple of places (general modeling, tools, paint & air brushing or one of the modeling forums).

Unfortunately for me, the only solution to the errors I get is to walk away and get a cup of coffee and try the site again in a few hours....  WICKED frustrating...(Little New England lingo for ya there...)

Yes, I know they are still there, but not easily found.

I found the links in old posts (prior to the new forum) were broken. I tried the search function with no success. The search function does not work with the old post number.

I am no programmer. But in my simple-minded thinking, all it needs are a few lines of script. First, detect the old link syntax, then, redirect it to the post with the "new, improved" link syntax. It should be fairly simple. Right?

I first posted this in Dec 25, 2009, but never heard from any staff. This is a re-post.

Which posts are you looking for? To the best of our knowledge everythihng should be there and accessible through the search engine which is functioning now. You may need to expand the search through sorting and filtering.

Cheers, Aaron

Aaron,

Yes, I know that the posts are there and I can find them using the correct keyword. But I may not know what keyword to use.

But the "link to another post" in an older post no longer work. For example in this post last year 2009, I have a link to an even old post in 2008:

This is a follow-up of my post from last year (2008).

The syntax of the link to the 2008 post is /forums/968412/ShowPost.aspx. It does not work in the new forum, but I know the old post number is "968412" according to the 2009 link. If I do not remember what this older 2008 post is all about, how do I find it? Searching for the post number does not work.
