The Longest Thread?
Posted by Sprue-ce Goose on Saturday, February 12, 2011 4:59 PM

The recent push for an even 100 pages on the thread

How to get your wife to agree to the purchase of a $229 plastic model...

prompted me to check if a forum search for thread length was possible.

As best as I can determine, the forum software was not desgned for such a search unless someone knows the title of a thread.

Do any other methods exist for checking thread length ( within member rights parameters )?

There have been several group builds that have gone over 100.  Just doing a quick look, I see one that has gone over 700.

With all due respect, it's hard to believe that a thread of more or less drivel, has gone on so long. What is sad to me is that you'll see a superior build or WIP that gets nary a blink of feedback. That is truly sad.

Ditto   And many of the regular participants in that thread are more experienced members who could really contribute valuable content.

Which specific build or WIP do you refer to?

Any really. I frequent the armor forum and I'll see many threads that get only a few posts. Some of the WIPS like Bill's or Tony's can draw as many as 100 or so, but a useless thread like the 229 that has over 1000 comments, many repetitive, just amazes me. Most get a few dozen at most. At least something was actually accomplished in a WIP or completed build thread, rather then one that makes complete mockery of a number.

True, but don't blame the 229 thread...members pointed out that kind of behavior long before 229 even existed...most of the threads in the Forum DO NOT involve a finished model or WIP...

Sorry to hear it.

I would still like to know the method Berny used to locate the thread by length.

Forgive me, I'm not certain who Bill and Tony are.

Can you post a link to some of their work?

As for me: I don't post any WIP threads because my camera macro mode isn't up to the task.

As I must pay this year for recent winter storm damage, a new hot water heater, a new chimney and other residence maintenance, I won't be purchasing a camera capable of producing images for posting during 2011.

The 229 thread is a social gathering, nothing more. Guys go in there to hang out and shoot the breeze. No harm, no foul. It gets a little boring to go to every build thread and post a 'Hey, nice job'. And yes, a lot of very experienced people are participating in the 229 thread - but as far as I can tell that has not prevented any of them from participating elsewhere - heck it may even be encouraging them to spend more time here so they don't miss anything - and they all offer plenty of good advice and comments when they see a need.

And the 229 thread DID accomplish something - so far it has spawned at least one Group Build...

...I agree...it is the local "bar" within the thread.

And I'm glad you mentioned the 229 GB. It may be the only "off-topic" tread ever to spin off a legitimit GB in Forum history...of course, there are some who will remain unnamed (Vance) who are giving the 229 GB a bad name...

And some cool "badges", pics and vids have also come out of it...hmmmmmm, maybe this thread will be the next "229 thread"...

To my knowledge there is no search engine to find the most pages.  I did happen to know that several group builds have gone over 100 pages and a quick look at the group builds did show one that was over 700 pages.  All I did was scroll through the pages in the group build section and found it.

Her is wbill's WIP on the Dragon Hetzer tank.

My apologies if I'm coming off prudish about the thread. Really I don't care and have made about 2-3 posts in the thread. I agree that not everything has to be modeling related or serious at that. I recall the early days of the forum, when a couple of members (shermanfreak and Dwight ta ala) would take photos of members and photochop them. It was irrelevant, but hilarious and inspired great comraderie.

My guess is that one of those obnoxious "trivia" threads holds the title for length...

Idea IDEA! Let's start a $229 trivia thread!

I like your optimism  ! Big Smile

.....actually, you are off by a few decimals. I expect it to be closer to $2, 290 depending on whether I can make a sheet metal break to bend sheet aluminum trim and if I can get  away with just a new hot water heater anode.

Whoooo-eee ! !!!  Have hot water heaters gone up in price !

Possible misc cost would be grout ; never did get to re-grout the brick exterior though it still appears in good shape.

Though I climb up on the roof each year to check for CATastrophic damage, I was late this year due to sanding, caulking and painting....meaning - off-line from FSM.

Alexandria, Va. (December 16, 2009)

A biennial survey by the National Society of Accountants found that the cost of preparing an itemized Form 1040 with a Schedule A and a state tax return averages $229.
