Manstein's revenge

Manstein's revenge

Tim Kidwell

The default is for threads to open with the initial post and then subsequent posts, oldest to newest, in chronological order, as was the case with the Forum before the update. The initial post that starts a thread always appears at the top of the first page, no matter how the following posts are displayed (oldest to newest/newest to oldest).

The default is accommodating for new members. Switching this would mean erecting a barrier to people joining the Forum in the future. Current members are experienced Forum users, and are better equipped to navigate the technological hurdles presented them than the typical newbie. At present, it will remain as is.

I don't understand how that is a barrier for people to join???

That's sorta the mentality that occurs when you find your cell phone carrier is offering great deals for new subscribers but doing nothing for loyal customers they have had for years...

Manny,

As has been stated, this is the way the system works. And it was the default on the old forum software. It can be easily changed by users.

Thanks, can you post a hot-link for me to that area where I can change this feature???

Sure thing. Here's part of Craig's message from earlier in the thread with the link:

"Otherwise if you prefer to always have the replies to threads go from newest to oldest so you can see the newer replies first you can change this option in your Community Settings.  Click the 'Advanced' tab and change the default post sort order [Tim's edit: It's the first option at the top of the page].  This option was built in so that every member can have their own personal preference on how posts are ordered."

Put me down for one of those questioning the new colour scheme.  I'm not a computer programmer, but I'm certain that colours do not effect download time.  I'm guessing the muted tones are to placate the mobile users?

The colour is not just about stimulating the senses, but provides structure to the overall layout, and I think that has failed in this new design.   Right now it is relying too heavily on the small avatars and those with graphic signatures to separate the posts.  Those G.B. badge signatures look even more overpowering now.

regards,

Jack

Well on the third day I think I have figured out most of the stuff I want to do here. The Mobile version is mostly improved except for the lack of photos and the inability to go to the end page of threads immediately. Now lets see if the activity level picks up here.

Didn't realize the photos weren't enabled in the mobile layout.  There's no reason it can't be so I went ahead and turned it on.  They should be appearing now.  Thanks for the heads up.

Well thats great news... now for the ability to go directly to the lat post on the mobile app... or if it's already there for me to figure out how to do so...Confused

Ninetalis

Look, this was somethin I would have done, which is also what manstein means I guess,

Photobucket

Just put the text and all closer together, this would make scrolling through the threads waaay easier and faster, I don't know if you know allready... people want everything as fast and easiest as possible...

I think your designer/programmer should know this by now...

With regards, Ninetalis

Id like a more condensed version too!

I would still like to see a response to not being able to jump pages in the threads on the mobile version, as well as the lack of a "view your discussions" button on the mobile version. Thank you for enabling pictures, though. That is a major improvement.

Oh, and I would like to respectfully point out to the older generation that wants nothing to do with the "mobile-thingies," that we always talk about how to get younger people interested in the hobby. Well I can tell you that the more technologically accessible we make it, the more likely we are to get younger folks interested. Just my 2 cents.

So far no issues found on the "normal" format but in the "mobile" version like everyone else says the not have pages is a pain. So I ended up turning off the mobile feature.

But nice work though otherwise!

Yes, now that I have posted from the mobile version, that in and of itself is a major improvement over trying to do so from my cell phone while at work. But please give us both the ability to go straight off to the last post on a thread straight off and a "View Your Discussions" on Mobile.

Another fine tune I suggest on the main site (and mobile) is while under "View Your Discussions" that it has the ability as before to select forums such as Armor, Aircraft, Figures, Ships, etc. as were able to do under the prior system.

I have no "mobile" gizmos, and no desire to aquire any, so that part doesn't matter to me.  Anyhow, the current version works fine for me on my old PC.

We need a second button, like the "new post" button, for "mark all read".   In any forum with a lot of posts, that is a very frequently used function and we should not have to scroll way down the very long windows to get to it.  The larger windows and increased white space means we have to do more scrolling as is.  And then after marking all read, we have to scroll back up or back down to get to the path links to get to the next forum.  Suggest maybe when mark all read is exercised it automatically returns you to top of forum (if you do not put such a button up near the top).

I find, even when I do use the existing button in its "way down the page" location, it doesn't always work.  Sometimes it does, but frequently when I mark all read, it still says there is a new post in a particular forum, and when I go there, the last post is the same one I have read before and marked all read afterward!
