Suppressing the latest popup to resubscribe
Posted by the Baron on Thursday, March 28, 2013 11:46 AM

OK, now we get a band that pops up across the bottom of the page, prompting us to renew our subscriptions.  Mine runs out in 2015, so I don't want to see this.  Sure, I click the x to close it, but it's still a minor e-annoyance.  Is there a way to disable this?

Hi guys,

I'm working on this. The person in charge of web promotions is currently out of the office. But I'll get an answer for you or get you in touch with someone who can answer your questions.

Thanks,

Tim

I didn't even notice it until I read this thread. Subliminal messaging?!  I don't mind it, but I will hit the X when it does start to bother me.

You didn't see it (free beer)?  It pops up when I land on the index page (free beer) and it stays there (free beer) as I go from page to page (free beer) till I click the X on the band (free beer) to make it go away.

Not a big deal (free beer) but I don't think it's a subliminal ad (free beer)

Thanks, Tim!

Like I said, it's not a big deal, but it is a change, which to my mind as an IT person, always makes me think something has changed or may be broken.

Enjoying the latest issue of FSM, by the way, and it comes at the perfect time.  I am about to use PE on a couple of ship builds, for the first time.  The feature article is very useful.

Best regards,

Brad

I had this sudden, unexplanable urge to renew my subscription. Do I get a free beer? I don't know where I got that idea.

Why am I so thirsty?    I just wanted to see what could be done about that slightly annoying pop-up and now all I want to do is hang around some dank bar!  Whos the Yeti in the corner.........

Using my Kindle to read the forums, I actually prefer to view the full site rather than the mobile. The new green subscribe banner has a very nasty habit of planting itself right in the middle of the page and not moving. Not sure if this happens on all of them, but I would imagine it does.

Apparently I have upset the IT guys. No matter how many times I hit the X to close the pop-up it always reapeares. It,s not a real problem,   I can ignore it but it seams that my mental cannon is shooting BLANKS at it.

Hi Jester,

This is the response I received:

"Currently there is not a way to suppress ro manage the site ribbon based on browser type. The ribbon is created via standard code to position the ribbon at the bottom of the browser page, but some older proprietary browsers, like found on the Kindle, may interpret that code differently."

He suggests to close the ribbon.

These promotions are beyond the control of the FSM editorial staff, so, we're unable to make any sort of direct changes. And, unfortunately, Aaron and I get to be the bearers of unhappy news.

Regards,

Tim

Do they get any feedback on how effective that little annoying things like that actually are? I mean is there something that tracks actual renewals due to that banner?

Everything is tracked, from how often those banners are clicked to how much time I spend on the Forum.

As for the original question from the Baron, the green ribbon across the bottom of the screen is there to stay. Other promotions are keyed to particular demographics--whether you're logged in, a subscriber, or a non-subscriber. Again, these are beyond the control of FSM's editorial staff.

Tim

True once you suppress it that you hardly notice it.

But now when I login I have to change to full site from mobile and suppress this bar at the bottom before I do anything.

Not very user friendly if you ask me - which I realize no one did - so I guess it just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I find it incredibly annoying. I am also an IT person. I recognize a deliberate placement - it happens in a lot of pop-ups (hide the close button). Notice the "expand" button is snuggled right up against the scroll down arrow. Promoting something to those that already have it is absurd and a waste of money and my time. Being an IT guy, I really don't like the "standard code" response. We get that a lot from a vendor that is a bit sloppy in their work. If the site can track who I am and the number of visits, etc. it can surely make a short trip across the electron highway to see if I already have a subscription or not - both online and paper and the newsletter, too.

Hi guys,

There isn't much more I can do. I've passed on your complaints, and I've reported the answers I've received. On this front, it's just not my (or the rest of the editorial staff's) call.

As I've written in a previous post, certain promotions react to the viewer depending upon whether you are logged in, registered, or a subscriber. The green ribbon is a mainstay. I get all of the above every time I land on the site, so I'm not unsympathetic.

If you would like to make a more formal entry into the record, the only other thing I can suggest you do is  contact Customer Sales and Service and report your experiences directly.

I'm sorry that I can't do more concerning this issue.

Thanks,

Tim

Well, I have a brand new lap top, so maybe there's something in there that blocks it. I'm a computer loser, so I certainly didn't do anything.

I just discovered something. That little black square with the arrow is the pop up in question. I clicked on it, and it showed up. Clicked the 'X' and it disappeared. Don't know if that helps, but the it is.

we should bombard the e-mail address Tim provided and complain. The reason web designers bury the little black arrow and such as they have, is to make it more difficult to spot and close - in this case, you will likely open it as well if your "mousing" skills aren't precise. While it is a minor annoyance, I think forums should be free of pop-up ads. I have no problem with ads on the sides of the page.
