Spacing and Punctuation
Posted by tankerbuilder on Friday, July 18, 2014 3:55 PM
Okay ! I hope someone reads this and figures out the problem . When I post , even with proper punctuation and paragraph spacing it sucks . It all comes out as a conglomeration of one mass of words . Why ? HELP !

Seemed to work ok for that post Tankerbuilder. I only see an extra space before punctuation marks.

TB, until you get it all figured out, I suggest that at the end of each of your paragraphs, you hit Enter twice.

I know that some don't like that, but, it puts a blank line in between the paragraphs, which, while not a perfect solution, will at least be easier for your readers to read. Once you get that part to be consistent, you can work on other solutions more easily. Do you still hit Space, Space after your period and before the next sentence?

It is funny, but, even after all the time some people have put into "adjusting to a keyboard", we can still spot the old dinosaurs that used Electric Typewriters or *gasp* Manual Typewriters before getting a PC.

I still "mash on the keys" even though I have been away from the old days when we were taught to "strike" with the pinkie just as hard as with the index finger for a very long time. My Fortran/Keypunch teacher in college used to actually turn red in the face while trying to re-train me.

I can't think of what it must be.

This post was done the same way I always do it.

I have typed short lines to represent very small paragraphs, and after each of them, I hit Enter twice.

When I only hit it once, it looks like the spacing between the line above and this line.

Then I hit Enter twice again, and it spaces out like this.

Something is different, maybe it is a setting in your operating system, but, using either Enter key is working for me.

I am not the person to make suggestions on fixing Windows, I am an old DOS/text based computer dinosaur, I only tolerate Windows and Mac because no one uses AppleSoft and PC-DOS anymore, hah.

When I first started using IE11 I had exactly the same issue, everything was coming out in one continuous, joined up paragraph regardless of how it was formatted prior to posting.

If your using IE, the problem can be resolved by adding finescale to compatibility;

Click on IE's settings cog on the top right, click compatibility view settings & then add "finescale.com" (excluding quotation marks) into the "add this website" box

I don't know what is going on at your end, I recall you are having trouble separating paragraphs.

At my end, the flashing cursor seems to disappear. But not always, more random. ie, during this post, it is working.

Have you rebooted your computer lately? Just a long shot.

Greg, I get that problem popping up every now and then, too. The good news is that if you click somewhere and start typing, you can see where you are, and finish your post. It does catch you off guard when it happens, though, eh?

It does indeed, Rex. Odd situation that I've only noticed on this forum, but that means little as I visit only two forums regularly, the other not model related.

Good idea to just start typing, see where we're at. Such a simple solution I hadn't considered. Thanks, mate!

Egad!  Someone remembers "Fortran" and "key punch"!  I was one of the old dinosaurs in those days and earlier, too.

Anyhow, I have not had any of the problems you speak of on this forum.  I am using an iMac and it works fine.  Sorry I can't offer any further advice.

I am having the same problem.  It is extremely frustrating.  I am using an iPad to write on these forums and it has been an absolute nightmare!!!   Not only do I have the indents being removed, but most often the post button disappears.  So everything that I typed is useless because I can't hit the post button. This happens as the message grows, and forget about adding images.  The post button disappears when I add more than one image, like clockwork.

What I noticed is that the post button becomes hidden underneath FSMs menu information and there is no way to get at it.  This just happened to me on another thread.  I might have to reluctantly begin using my PC but by the sound of things, that might not work either.  I hope someone figures it out soon because this is very quickly taking the fun out of this site.  I am close to throwing in the towel.  One other thing.  I noticed FSMs pop-ups advertising their magazines interfere with my posts as well.   Personally, I think the whole problem is related to FSMs pop-ups.  FSM needs to take a hard look at what they are doing with this website.   PLEASE!  It looks like some bad code with this site.

I just tried posting a message on another thread using my PC.  I had the same  issues with the indents.  I did not have the issue of the disappearing reply/post button though.  So there are issues using two devices.  I just noticed that parts of the messages in this thread are being cutoff in the thread above.  I am on my iPad now. This is really frustrating.

I think it has to do with the browsers and how they apply the website's code.  If you're using IE11, you might need to use Compatibility View when accessing FSM.

I've noticed the issue with the cursor, when I choose the rich formatting option to write a reply.  It just started recently.   I'm using Firefox.  I need to check for upgrades for the browser.

Hey! Tarnship :

I guess then you used a Selectric model one, then too . Our ship had a bunch of typewriters and I wound up with a unit circa 1939. Had to take it apart to get it to work .best huntin' and peckin" I ever did.

I didn't realize I had to give a daily to the Captains messenger when he stopped by . The " old man " was always worried we were going to run out of gas , I guess. Well ,Fuel oil no.2.     T.B.            P.S. Never did get formal training on anything with a keyboard . I still type with the two index fingers. Oh, ceptin' my piano.

I am having the same problem. No matter what I type its all compressed together. In Rich formatting all the buttons for inserting images, links etc are gone. In case it happens here too, everything before all the X's is new to this post, double spaced, added the X's and cut/paste the message that I 1st noticed this. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Something wrong... Can't post properly. When I type out the post all the spacing and formatting is gone an it's all compressed into a single paragraph. Words, image file, links... everything. The buttons at the top to insert images, make links etc are gone. Anyone else having this problem. To see if it happens again this post has 4 parts separated with spaces.

Yeah  I had the problem today again.  One thing I noticed.  Whenever I do any type of pasting in the post, the problem happens every time.  Whether it be a link or a sentence that I paste.  As long as I don't paste, it works ok.  Did you do any pasting?

Well anyway... I wish they would fix this or at last acknowledge the problem.  There are some serious bugs on this site.  What is the point of this Error Reporting forum if it doesn't get monitored. Letting the problem fester is not a good way to do business.

My two cents.

The most likely culprit for the text interface problems is an update to your computer's browser. If using Internet Explorer 11, try setting it to compatibility mode. I use the latest versions of Safari, Firefox, and Chrome without issue. If this doesn't work, let me know and we'll explore other options.

Adding the site to compatibility view 100% cures the issue  in IE11;

See.

Can't comment on Safari though.

Hi Marc,

Only admins get a delete button. <strokes white cat and adjusts monocle>

In seriousness, when we delete a post, we have to fill out a little form that says why the message is getting deleted, and then the deleted post goes into a folder of deleted posts. It really is an admin job. So, if there's a post that you've made and you like deleted, just ask us. Usually, though, we reserve deletions for posts that break the Forum rules. A post that gets accidentally posted into the wrong thread can just be moved. And we don't delete old posts.

Take care,

Tim

Hi Bakster,

I've posted from my iPad this morning and I'm not sure what it is that you're encountering. Can you elaborate?

Thanks,

Tim
