Interfering ads
Posted by littletimmy on Saturday, January 27, 2024 9:33 PM

I realise your forum software is from the last century, but your need for revenue  has gotten out of hand.

It's bad enough that the ads surround my screen as I'm trying to view a subject ( it freezes my screen so I can do nothing until it decides to go away )

But now, I can't even post without an ad loading itself right over what I'm attempting to type.

It took 4 trys just to post this.

Yea, yea, I know about ad blockers.

I shouldn't be forced to block robo ads.

Maķe that 5 trys to type this.

forget it,, I have be

There's no point.

I need this forum about as much as I need another hole in my head.

I use adblocker added to Microsoft Edge browser. Free and eliminates all ads on this site.

Yea, the ads can be annoying, but no, the site owner doesn't usually control them, and can severely degrade the usability of the site.

The ads also pay for the domain, hosting, storage and bandwidth, everything needed for you get to see the site at all.

Sfaik, the site owner doesn't make money here, & runs it as a sideline. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Some sites (don't know about this one) offer a PAID for version without ads, so without ads or subscriptions, no site, even with a publishers' backing.

When the UK mag Military Modelling folded, so did the site.

Options, Ad blockers, pay subs, or try a different browser, in incognito/private mode, as some are better than others.

i agree with you and I'm on an iPad so addblockers isn't an option. These adds crash my browser or slows it down to almost nothing.

You are misinformed. There are plenty of ad block apps available for for iPad/iOS/Safari. A quick app store search would find them. Unless your iPad is 1000000 years old, you should be able to run something.

Yes, but the site users should not need to download ad blockers to use this site. There is NO OTHER modeling website that I know of that has such a horrid situation.

Never been to Hyperscale? Meanwhile, while no is happy about ads, it is what it is. You can find a way to deal with it, or move on. Kalmbach clearly is not going to do anything about it. Most likely, this forum is going to disappear anyway, frankly. FSM is on its last legs these days.

Not in many years have I been on there. There was no problem with pop ups back then, but its not a freindly bunch of folks there so I moved along. My basic dealing with it here is posting less. This site does not play well with my phone or ipad, so if I do a lengthy post its from my laptop or. copy and paste of my work from elsewhere, possibly with a few changes...

It seems this thread has gotten a little hot. A couple of things, and I know everyone in here has heard all of this before, because I've said it before in other threads to many of the same people:

1) FSM isn't on its last legs, so put that old horse out to pasture, please.

2) You're basically complaining at editorial for the popup ads and there is literally nothing I, nor anyone else on the edtiorial team can do about them. I use two different browsers, one with an ad blocker and one without; the first to do work, and the other to see what the rest of the world sees. They are frustrating beyond belief. Do I get tired of hearing and reading complaints? Yep. But they are a function of Kalmbach Media, not FineScale Modeler.

3) We don't need members of the FSM Forum sniping at each other. We want this place to be welcoming, and with all of the other challenges that the Forum is facing right now, the last thing we need is tempers to flare. We're all people and sometimes we just want to express our frustration. If you see a post that rankles, better to let it go than jump in. If the post breaks Forum rules, then please report it. I see nothing here that breaks Forum rules, but let's be understanding of each other's POV.

4) Lastly, FSM has a lot of projects underway to rejuvenate the Forum and website. It's not that we haven't heard you. We have. So, I'll let you know more when I can--and that should be pretty soon.

For now, I'm going to lock this thread and ask everyone to move along.

Thanks,

TK
