Newbie to the hobby
Posted by skengley on Sunday, December 28, 2008 10:38 AM
Hi everybody,
I'm pretty new to the hobby & brand new to the forum so I thought I'd introduce myself.
I live in balmy Edmonton ,AB Canada & our with our harsh winters there's lot's of time to spend indoors modeling.
Although I started many kits as a youngster & would see them part way through & then quit . I guess I had a short attention span.
My modeling interests are simple....WWII .
I'm proud to say that I've recently completed my first model (Tamiya 7.5 cm Anti-Tank gun) & although it won't make it into the pages of F.S.M I am pretty pleased with the end results (not much detail on the gun crew as far as highlighting/ shadowing but I will learn) . My second project has been 1/350 Bismarck (Tamiya) & it's going well . I'm also experimenting with painting techniques on another gun crew (again..Tamiya......anybody see a pattern here?)
Time & patience will no doubt sharpen my skills & I will consider myself "hooked" to the hobby.
Although most of my kits are Tamiya , I have picked up a few different brands (Revell , Dragon , Trumpeter) & am starting to see the difference's between kits (Dragon figures are great!)
I should also mention that I have worked exclusively with acrylics & just purchased my first airbrush yesterday .
I have a question:
Which manufacturer makes the best kit for : figures , armor , ships , planes , artillery ?
As mentioned above I have been experimenting between manufacturers & have noticed difference in quality . It seems that Trumpeters planes are nicer , Dragon troops & armor are great , but it would really help my wallet if anybody could point me in the right direction for high quality kits.
I will practice airbrushing on my cheaper kits & save the nice ones for later.
Thanks for reading my post & I look forward to many years with the hobby.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] tot the hobby, and the forums!

Asking about who makes the best kits will open it up for many different opinions.  Also, some manufactures seem to specialize in different scales.  I build mostly aircraft, and in 1/48 and 1/32 scale Hasegawa and Tamiya are my top choices. Thumbs Up [tup]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forums, skengley!!! As for your question, "Which manufacturer makes the best kit for: figures, armor, ships, planes, and artillery?" The answer isn't really simple, because all the manufacturers make hit and miss kits. For example, Italeri makes some crappy aircraft models, but their is a few they make that are actually great.

I can sorta answer who makes the best armor kits. Dragon makes some of the best kits, but they are expensive. Tamiya and Tristar make great kits at somewhat reasonable prices. After that I guess it would be Italeri, Zvezda(they may be an eastern eurpean brand but their kits are suprisingly good),and Revell. I might have missed something, but other folks can fill in what I'm forgetting.
