Deaf Modeler
Posted by deafpanzer on Sunday, April 5, 2009 8:39 PM

I think it is safe to say that I am offically back in my hobby building military models.  It has been more than 20 years since my last build.  College, careers, marriage and two young boys!  Last year I got the rash to resume my modeling hobby... boy, my wife wasn't thrilled when she found out how much I have spent at the hobby stores and eBay to start up my hobby. Black Eye [B)]

Yes, I am deaf in case you are wondering... born deaf... always am into military history.  Don't ask me how I got into this!  When I was very young I always dressed up like a solider and watched those old war movies.  Poor my mom, she had to break the news that I couldn't serve on the armed force because of my deafness when I was about 8 years old... I was real upset!  Boohoo [BH]

I am pretty into WWII armory and figures.  I have been working on American G.I. figures and I hope to start building my first tank M24 Chaffee because my father-in-law drove one when he was in the service.  It will be a good practice because I will plan not keep it as it will be a gift for him.  I hope it doesn't make me sound like a bad son-in-law? Confused [%-)]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forums, deafpanzer!!! Hope to see you around the armor section! Oh by the way, don't worry about giving your first tank away as a gift. I've given people gifts that would make that look like gold.Wink [;)]

Andy.

Thanks for the email. Yes I do use sign language but I am not fluent at it. I only use basic sign and compensate with finger spelling but being a deafend adult I speak very well and mostly use my voice more than I sign. I rarely use sign now and mostly because I am around hearing people most and rely on them to write what I need to know, also because they do not know how to sign. I get along pretty well through and do try to teach them how to sign whenever I can,

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] aboard, deafpanzer. My significant other and co-conspirator on these forums, urbanlamb, is also deaf in her right ear, but uses a hearing aid for the left. She has no problems speaking, and she can also lip-read, which helps a lot in noisy environments. Her brother is completely deaf, and watching those two "sign" can be pretty interesting trying to keep up with the "conversation."

The sign language urbanlamb uses is ASL, and she's also proficient in LSQ: Langue des Signes Quebecoise. She had to learn it as part of her job description, as the Quebecker francophones are still delusional thinking they're distinct. (More like semi-extinct when the separatists finally find out only 16% of Quebec is NOT native treaty land whenever they try their nonsense again.)

WOW! It is great to know that there are deaf modelers out there.  I hope we get to meet at those big shows one day.  I will definitely be at the National show this August in Ohio since it will be only 3-4 hours drive away.  I use ASL profoundly.  I can lipread but not with anybody.

Bought me an airbrush gun (Iwata Eclipse HP-CS) last week and now I am shopping around for an air compressor.  The forums have been very helpful... looks like it is best to buy one of those compressors from home improvement stores instead of those little expensive compressors.  I am thinking about buying a Craftman compressor from Sears for only $100-125 unless you have better suggestions.  I recall it is best not to buy one that requires oil lube but I do not understand why... assume oil can interfere with the painting or something?

Thank you for all of the comments!

Hello deafpanzer and mike007!

I'm Deaf as well! Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Jagdwolf is my fella, and he introduced me to models last year.  I'm in love with the Beaufighters...(possibly more in love with them than him). Big Smile [:D]

I don't have much time for modelling, it's a hobby that I dabble in...but Jagdwolf has been in it for years...and when we first started dating, I figured...'eh...can't fight it....I'll join in'.  I'm glad I did however, because some of the builds are sweeeet!

I'm 'functionally Deaf', meaning with my hearing aid, I can get by in the hearing world very nicely.  My brother is completley Deaf though, and I grew up with ASL.

Nice to meetcha!

Lord keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth.

Pssst, Urbanlamb. Sweetie, you forgot Air Master Modeler. Oops [oops] The poor lad will be doomed to trudge through the forums, feeling unrecognized for his contributions to this excellent site.

Or he'll probably pick on you about the Beaufighter. Hard to say. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Welcome to the forum, and let me get on my soapbox once again (dont know if I have done this here) and say that this kind of thing is why the internet is one of the greatest things man kind has done.  If you hadent of said you were deaf, none of us would have known, I didnt know we had this many Deaf people on the forum, and you know what, if you, or they build, who cares if your blind, deaf, dumb (or tommy).  Just remember, Beethoven was deaf for the latter part of his life, and look what he did, eh'.  So im off my soapbox

Welcome to the forum, Build, ask questions, be merry, I cant wait to see your builds.

Oh, and giving away your kits as gifts, even if its your first, is a great thing.  If your not a builder you dont notice the same mistakes that we notice, your father in law should love it, no matter the conditoin, its the thought that counts eh'

Shock [:O] Now now, I would never pick on a fellow modeler... unless they were building a Bull fighter. Laugh [(-D]

Nah luv...Air Master would never pick on me for liking Beaufighters....he may however inquire what I'm doing with a wolf?? Laugh [(-D]

Sorry for that Air Master, didn't mean to leave ya out!...kudos on you for the lip reading by the way.  I know what a challenge it is to function in the hearing world...gets kinda stressful.  I don't know about you, but I just love it when my hearing aid is not in, and I hear nothing...so peaceful.

*bonus for me, because my fella snores* Zzz [zzz]

Odd question, lamb, but do you actuially hear 'nothing'

I know that your body produces two specific sounds of it's own, I believe your circulitory system (wow I cant spell for my life) makes a constant low sound like a rumble, and your central nervous system can make a high pitched whine, do you not hear those either?

Sorry if thats a stupid question.

Oh no, not an odd question at all smeagol, it's one that I've been asked before.Smile [:)]

You are absolutley right, there's the rythm of the body that is always in the background, normal functions such as swallowing, or clearing the throat take on entirley different sounds...the closest I can compare it to is being underwater.

I'm very conscious of my heartbeat and my body feels 'heavier' if that makes any sense at all.

Tinnitis occurs a lot with me when my aid is out...I have quite often, high pitched whines...very low and far off, but I hear them often...long, drawn out whines...kinda like hitting a glass and the tinging sound reverberates for a while.

I however, don't know about any whine sound associated with the CNS, or a rumble of the circulatory system...just the occasional rumble of my tummy. Dinner [dinner]

Smeagol-

Nah, it is not an odd lamb question... I have been born profoundly deaf and I attended a school for the Deaf in upstate NY.  I really don't hear that much... I can only hear real low pitch but loud noises like a car without a muffler, plane and helicopters flying so low, gun shots (at the shooting ranges!) and dog barkings, etc.  If you were driving in a police car with sirens going off at its highest level right behind me, I would never know about it because the noise is high pitched.  Everybody has different type of hearing loss.  Hearing aids does not help me at all except to cause me headaches!

I have really enjoyed reading your threads especially the most recent one in the armors forum...  I have been following the forums for maybe 3-4 months before I jumped in and I have learned a great deal from you guys already.

Hey Urbanlamb!  Smile [:)]

Your fella was telling me about you earlier... it is amazing to find out how many deaf modelers are out there.  Perhaps we should start up some kind of forum for this or we will continue and use my forum.  Jagdwold is very lucky to have somebody like you who enjoys this hobby... my wife is great and I love her BUT she has absolutely NO interest and I won't dare to tell her what models I want for Christmas or birthdays unless I print something from the website so she can bring it to a local hobby store and show it to the store clerk!

It is great to know that hearing aid helps you... not for me... I am way TOO DEAF.  I wonder if you are able to use telephone without any difficulties?  I have been using the latest technology videophones to talk with others using ASL.  I work for non-profit corporation as assistant director distributing free telephone equipment for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and I oversee the relay service for the state of Indiana.

It has been great connecting with you and several other deaf/hoh modelers!  I am going to build M24 Chaffee tank hopefully in two weeks after things slow down.  My father-in-law drove it when he was in the Army and it will be his birthday gift and I have plenty of time... his birthday isn't til September! Party [party]

That tank for your father-in-law is a great idea!  I know that once a year, our IPMS chapter tries to go the Pearly Veterans Home for a meeting, and the vets have lots of memories and stories to share.  I don't think it's been done for a while though, and a shame it is...

As for me developing an interest in models...I enjoy the history behind the development of some of the planes, and learning about the pilots that flew them.  I'm not necessarily interested in the nitty gritty details...my fella can babble all day about different kinds of Focke-Wulfs...B this, and C that, and H this...it's enough to make my head spin! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I also really like the artistry involved...I mean Doog is my hero, ya know?  It's really exciting learning about the different techniques...his Lair of the Rust Bunnies, using the hairspray technique just about blew my socks off!

In answer to your question, yes I can use a phone with my aid, but the volume needs to be high, and if the speaker slurs their words, speaks too fast or has a thick accent, t's difficult for me.

My brother and I talk over the internet on Vision, a webcam based method of communication for the Deaf, and I love that.

It's been nice getting to know some other Deaf modellers here...I really admire a lot of the work that folks here do, and it's nice to see the passion for something that is a true art.  Keep on modelling, and sharing...these forums are wonderful, and I enjoy them!

Take Care
