Greetings from Dayton, Ohio
Posted by Aelfwyn on Monday, November 1, 2010 11:57 AM

Hello all,

I haven't built a model since I was a teenager (which was longer ago than I care to think about), and I wasn't necessarily all that good at it then. (Mostly too impatient, and also far too impoverished to buy the proper equipment.) But I recently stumbled across some old, unbuilt kits I bought at one point or another — an F-4U-1 (1/72) from Testors, a Queen Anne's Revenge (1/250) by LIndberg, and some others — and I couldn't bring myself to just sell them on eBay. Somehow, it seemed to me that it would've felt like some kind of surrender, if you know what I mean.

So now I'm hunting for new paints and brushes and such; and above all, some of the technical knowledge that I never had back when I was a teen. That hunt led me to Fine Scale Modeler, and of course then to this forum.

So again: Hello all. Hajimemashite, yoroshiku onegai shimasu, and all that.

Welcome to the forum, you have arrived at the right place for good advice and some tips. This place will only feed the model itch. Good luck with the builds and again welcome!

Being in Dayton you have a built in source of reference material. (US Air Force Museum) Color me jealous.

You and I have a lot in common, Aelfwyn. I, too, am in Dayton, Ohio.  And I, too, built my last model airplane as a teenager and have just got back into it.

What inspired me was getting a ride on a B-25 back in April. It was the anniversary of the Doolittle raid and there was a gathering of a bunch of B-25s (something like 17 or so) at Grimes Field. That was exciting for me as I had never flown in anything except commercial airliners. So I decided to build a model B-25 after the plane I rode in. I ended up buying 3 B-25 kits!

Hobby Lobby has a 40% off coupon on their website, so you can get a good deal on paint there. I usually got a few times the weeks they have this coupon and pick up supplies at 40% off.
