Kevin, A good sprue cutter, xacto knife, sand paper/pads, miniature drill bits/pin vise, tweezers, the list goes on.  I believe that there was an excellent article in the October or November FineScale Modeler about this very subject.  I've always enjoyed painting 54mm Civil War figures.  I don't think that the two branches of the hobby are that far apart, a little more assembly with the model kits.  Good luck, and welcome aboard.  Rick.

Welcome Sign I think you'll find the tools for armor are the same as any other subject. Paint colors and weathering techniques will change some, but otherwise modeling is modeling.
