New here and ready to start modeling again
Posted by flyerduke on Thursday, December 27, 2012 7:25 PM

I'm ready to jump back into modeling after a 30 year break.  Seriously!  I'm looking for advice on kit manufactures, building supplies, and literature.  I realize there have been some serious advances in the modeling industy over the last 30 years.  I have a couple basic questions to start with.  What type of airbrush to buy?  What type of paints?  Best online store to buy kits and supplies?  A good publication that covers the basics?

I've have dozens of questions, but I think these will do for now.  Thanks for any help.

It's good that you have returned.

I've used the same type of airbrush for thirty years--Paasche H.  There are more sophisticated ones out there.

I use enamels from Model Master, Humbrol and WEM Colourcoats, thinned with lacquer thinner.  No experience with acrylics.  I like a good "paint smell!"

Online shops:  here are a few worthy merchants.  I've patronized all of them with no issues:

http://www.spruebrothers.com/

www.towerhobbies.com/index.html

http://www.squadron.com/

They are in no particular order, and I don't live in the UK, but sometimes Hannant's has stuff no one else does, and shipping from them is normally quite fast--about one week.  Each merchant has certain strengths, and almost no one has everything you need at the same/right time.

For publications, check out what Kalmbach offers here on the website.  They have lots, and some handle specific type kits.

Personally, I found a book put out by Airfix magazine's editor decades ago, and that really got me started seriously.  I see it's still around.  But I wonder where my copy went to?

For the dozens of other questions, keep asking.  Someone will have the answer.

Flyerduke, what is your location? That might have a bearing on the answers you get. I'd be hard pressed to advise you on types of tools or paints just because a lot of that is subject to personal taste.

When I picked the hobby back up in my '30's, one of the first discoveries I made was these very forums here. I spent a lot of nights looking at builds and reading up on all the tips on here. I've learned so much and improved immensely just by reading. The best part is, I've not spent a dime on books or mags (other than a subscription to FSM, which I just got this year as a gift from my wife).

So, my advice is to read, read, read!

edit: I wanted to add that once I did go out to buy tools and whatnot, I ended up using Model Master Acryls for their ease of cleaning and low toxicity. Badger was a well-known airbrush brand to me, so I picked up a Badger 360. Also, if Hobby Lobby is an option in your area, the 40% off coupon they issue on occasion can really take the bite out of modeling related prices. I'm a low income modeler, so every penny counts.
