Hi guys I am new to modeling and you could say a senor beginner . I bought my son a model to try and give him a new interest rather than his xbox ( failed badly ) so not to waste a perfectlygood model I attempted to have a go !!!! aaaahh Lots of research , visits to model , shops , off to a panel beater friend ( no name 3ltr com pressure and air brush )paint and every thing that goes with it . destroyed a couple of models ,cheap ones ,mistakes and blunders on a couple more but having a blast all the sameNow look to buy one to do ( I hope ) a bit better Have lots to learn a bout forums and things My wife says boys my age 60+ buy Harley Davidson's not plastic models!!!!
PS ; I have been watching the forums for a while now and decided to join in ( if you can allow a raw beginner) By the standards you guys have set it will be dirt in the face time for me before I reach it , but give it a go I willRegards Skeata
Heya Skeata! You're in the right place! You know I got the same thing from my wife until I built my 1/24th scale Bf109 last year and she was just awestruck. There are people into their 80's doing this stuff and they seem to be having a blast with it. As far as the dirt in the face thing you were talking about I'll say this as I've said to a few folks who worry about starting out fresh: You aint gonna be a master builder right out of the gate. Stick to the basics and master that first and then start branching out slowly to more advanced stuff. Basics being 1) a kit out of the box with no aftermarket add ons 2) practice cutting the parts from the sprue and cleaining the up (flash and sprue attachment points) and 3) for sure practice proper fit of the parts BEFORE you glue them into place. Use the "basics time " to thouroughly research your project. And 4) and this is a big one, resist the temptation to get the "modelling bug" and go out and buy a bunch of photo etch and resin stuff! You'll get overwhelmed quickly! Got questions............feel free to ask anybody. Got pictures...............don't be afraid to post them. Welcome to the Forums Skeata. My name is Jim and I am a plasticaholic. There are a lot of us "old timers" here. I'm 72 and have been building since I was 6. I just purchased my first airbrush a couple of years ago and am still learning how to use it. I'm also still learning how to do all the different types of weathering. Hang in there. It'll get a little better every day. Make your wife happy and buy a model of a Harley Davidson. My wife decorated the den in a beach theme with nets on the walls and shells caught in them, so, she wanted something that would go with it but couldn't decide what she wanted. She picked out a ship model from one of my catalogs and bought it for me to build. It took me about 2 years to build and now it sits on a shelf near the door in the den.(my avatar) Enjoy the hobby and don't forget to post pics of your builds.

Welcome Skeata! Reading your post reminded me of my first model car. It was CRAPTACULAR!!! But I learned and I improved over time. You will find all kind's of help here. (And yes I still can screw up a perfectly good tank from time to time!)

Gald to have you join us Skeata. Certainly, we all started somewhere and we all turned out our share of our share of clunkers. But, I'll gaurantee as you just pick up basic painting, gluing etc.. tips from the folks here and gradually practice and apply them you will be turning out some crowd pleasers in no time. Please do not hesitate to ask even the most basic of questions as everyone here is more than happy to help. See Ya Round the Forums.

Welcome Skeata- a good model might make you pull out the hairs from your head but it won't leave you with bugs in your teeth like a H-D will.
