Thirty+ years have passed
Posted by Offlaker on Friday, February 22, 2013 7:12 AM

My how things have changed! Hi, my name is Don and the last time I worked on a model was about thirty years ago. It's not that I lost a liking for the hobby, just that life got in the way (raising family, other interests etc). Now that I'm retired and not well enough to do too much else right now, I finally dug out that old 1:25 scale Tamiya Centurion tank. This is the model I abandoned so long ago.

I remember being frustrated with the painting of the model. Tamiya's instructions didn't give a lot of advise. And the parts are not all labelled well. Now, with the Internet, you can find lots of information. I think that's how I got to this site. Anyway I guess I don't have an interest in any one type of modeling. But I do have an interest in military stuff such as submarines and fighter aircraft. In real life I started out as a draftsman and continued to do that kind of stuff off and on as a Engineering Technician. But what I always wanted to do is make architectural models from scratch.Did it once with a group of friends - lots of fun.

By the way, in sorting thru my model paints (enamels and acrylics), about half of them are still OK.

Welcome!    German U-boats are my favorite so we will get along just fine!  I still have some Pactra paint bottles with a 35 cent stamp on them and their still going strong!  Dive right in and join the discussions.  Dont forget to post pictures of your builds.  We demand pictures!

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Welcome to the forums!

It was about 30 years for me as well.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) I can't find any of my old models.  And wow, technology has surely pushed the hobby forward.

On the bench:  Tamyia Mosquito Mk. VI for the '44 group build.  Yes, still.

Welcome aboard Offlaker! That's awesome you have a kit that you started 30 years ago. With all of the information online now you should be good to go. Post pics of the build in progress as well as the finished product. Good to have you, Joe

Thanks all! I will certainly post pictures as I proceed. Mostly I am fixing things that got broken over time. But, I am catching up. And as I go, I'm making mods to the kit. Anyway, I look forward to reading all of the advise and tips on this site.

I wish I still had the models of my youth. But after graduation I left Manitoba for Alberta. A year later I moved back and all was gone. C'est la vie . One was of the Polaris nuclear submarine. It had a transparent hull so that you could see all of its guts. I found the kit again last week on eBay where it sold for about $250 (sigh). So instead I purchased a German submarine type XXI by Revell Germany. It too has a visible interior, but without the clear plastic hull (and no shootable missiles).

I've looked at the member's gallery. Very very impressive. I think i'm out of my league.

Don, It is awesome to have you join us. WELCOME! Yup, I too was a 30 yr. abstainer. But, I'll tell you what when I was able to start modeling again joining this forum was the best thing I did. The excellent  folks here helped me to hone my modeling skills immensely and gave me a place to thoroughly enjoy the hobby. Trust me, you are in the right place. Joe
