The disaster was a Monogram Pro-Modeler A-4f Skyhawk. I did the Marine Attack Squadron version. Setting aside the seams you can drive a car through, the misplaced decals, and a paint job that is truly scary, I forgot to put a weight in the nose, so it sits on its tail. I'm now working on the Monogram Pro-Modeler F4U-5N Corsair, and an Academy MIG-21PF Fishbed D. All are in 1:48. My seams are improving, but my painting skills definitely need work. I'm also not too happy with the Academy model. The parts definitely don't have the fit or detail of the two Monograms.

I used to build plastic models as a kid, mostly planes and ships, and never with the attention to detail that I've seen in some of the posts here. Of course, that was 40+ years ago, and modeling was something to do on rainy days. Following some rather abrupt changes in our lives after 9/11, my wife returned to the workforce, leaving me with some spare time on the weekends. I was looking for a way to pass a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday while she's at work, particularly in view of the cold and snowy winter we've been having this year in the Northeast, and thought about building models. I bought my first one in December, and while the result was an unmitigated disaster, I learned alot. Mostly, I learned that I had a lot to learn if I was going to do more than just build junk. While looking for some pointers, I found this site. I've been reading your posts, and I've posted some questions of my own in the past week or so. I have to say, the experience has been unreal. I can't begin to tell you how much I've learned alredy, and the responses I've received, both in this forum and via e-mail from some of you, have been just great. So, thank you all in advance for your help, and your patience. In time, I hope to do for others what you've been doing for me.
