New guy here
Posted by rommelkiste on Friday, May 3, 2013 2:51 PM

Hello guys!  I have been glooin' and building kits for a little over 45 years and still enjoy it.  My eyes are not holding up to the hobby as well as I would like but I deal with it and it just takes me longer on projects than it used to.  Most of my modeling has been automotive.  In the late 90's I got kind of bored and tried my hand at some armor after seeing so many nice builds in FSM.  I wish I could say my projects looked like the ones in the magazine but I did have fun!  The last few years it has been more automotive subjects of all types.  I find new ways to do things from ALL of you builders.  I am now retired and my "Job" is this hobby.  Since I have been here, I have picked up more than a few new tricks from you guys, I would mention who you were if I could remember your names so I will just say Thanks! to all of you.  I like to model all kinds of F1, Indy, sports and road racing cars.  I dont do many ricers, but I now have the BRE 240Z on the bench as a break from a 1/12 F1 Ferrari.  When a project starts to feel like a real job, I go to something else for a while and then pick up again.  I'm sure some of you do the same.  Like to hear from some of you, always nice to meet new modelers.

Welcome to the funhouse! I can sympathize on the vision issue (it's frustrating to hold something six inches away, and have it look like it's at arm's length), but there are a bunch of good magnifying options out there. Would love to see some of your work if you've got pics to share.

Jump in and join the fun!

Welcome! If I may suggest, I believe there is an automotive group build going on right now. Take a look in the group build section and jump in!

Welcome aboard. If you don't already use one, I would strongly recommend a magnifying head band, such as an optivisor. When I came back into the hobby I found my eyes were aching trying to focus and I got one of these and now its never off my head.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Welcome!  I know what you mean about the eyes.  Had to purchase on optivisor type setup myself.  Well worth the investment.  I love mine and I can do so much more now detail wise.  I look forward to seeing your cars.  I am amazed at how you car guys get such awesome finishes!  So post pics, we love pics!

Thanks for the welcome you guys!  I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with "Old" eyesight.  I have learned to work through wearing trifocals AND an optivisor!  Sometimes it gets confusing where to look but I get by.  If you guys love pics, I'll see if I can round up some of my gloo-bomb shots.

I know what you're talking about, rommelkiste:  contacts, reading glasses and an optivisor, all at once.  And welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the Forums! Lots of us suffer from the same ailments. I use 2.5 Reading glasses through a large lighted magnifying glass. Also have a case of very shaky hands. Been building 66 of my 72 years. I build whatever strikes my fancy at the time. Enjoying what you do is 99% of the hobby. So, sit back, take a sip of your favorite beverage, and keep building. Oh, they were right about liking to see lots of pics.
