Permission to come aboard
Posted by Charles_Purvis on Friday, June 6, 2014 10:12 AM

I've tinkered with model building over the years, with varying success, but never attempted a ship model before. I'm a long-time fan of Patrick O'Brian and CS Forrester, and--at least for me--it's impossible to read these tales without becoming fascinated by the inner workings and boundless complexity/ingenuity of sailing ships.

The urge to tackle a model ship has been growing for a few years now, and I decided a prudent course would be to start with something simple and modest, to test both my skill AND my will.

I selected Revell's USS Constitution 1:196 scale for a few reasons:

* It's inexpensive
* There are extensive build logs of its larger, 1:96 scale, cousin, from which I could crib ideas for added detail
* The scale of many of the parts would test my ability/patience for painting (which has frequently been where my patience would run out in the past)

I started work back in March, and I'm proud to say I'm almost at the finish line. I'm also quite proud of some of the work I've done, and will post a build log in the next week or so.

I'm looking forward to showing you what I've come up with. Thanks!

Permission granted Sir! Welcome to the Forums! Glad to have you aboard!

You will find many like minded fellows on the Ship section of the Forums. As you can see from my Avatar, I build some ship models too (along with anything else that strikes my fancy at the time Wink).

Ration that man some rum!

That's not such any easy subject either- the rigging is a major task.

I look forward to seeing her.

Charles, welcome to the FSM Forum. Can't wait to see the Connie all dressed up.

I'm a huge O'Brian fan, too. Maturin or Aubrey? Sophia or Diana? I think some of O'Brian's most exciting writing in the series is in Desolation Island while the Waakzaamheid pursues the Leopard. Great stuff! I should stop before hijacking the thread. Maybe I'll start something over in the Ready Room.

Remember to post pics!

Tim

Tim--

Agree with you about the Waakzamheid scene in Desolation Island.  I love the fact that Aubrey can't easily shake off the horror of the way that chase ends.

I would love to see that entire sequence on film one of these days.
