Have You noticed ?

Hmmm;

      I see a trend here . Where have all these folks been . Not Modeling ? How terrifying ! I am so glad to see so many returning to the fold . I couldn't help but wonder as to why ? Now there are a quintillion reasons why we, as humans stop doing something we Enjoy .

     I would never deign to ask ,as at a tender old age of 71 , I know many of those reasons . They are for the most part valid . Very much so . This world we live in is getting so much in a hurry, that even the commercials on T.V. run over each other . Why should we be in that much of a hurry ? We all will end up in the same place someday ( I don't mean to be morbid there ) As we strive for fulfillment .

     When the world around spins inexplicably out of our control , many emotions come to the surface . We all know what they are, and we just have to deal with them . I learned a long time ago, That model building , good coffee and great music , do indeed soothe the savage beast inside . We might go on for years and wonder what is missing .

Now , when I had my hiatus it was before I joined up here . I did indeed truly miss building models but didn't realize it !   I picked up a new interest - GOLF . Great for getting out in the fresh air  . But, I found my mind wandering to that last model ship I never finished . No, not on the Golf Course but at other more peaceful times . Also less costly overall !

     This indeed did cause me to question what was going on . Hey !  I was 65 then and I was trying to keep up with a faster , younger world outside . Naw , I decided to turn on the stereo softly , brew a fresh pot of coffee and sit down at my newly cleaned and spiffed up work area and finish up that ship !

 That was the Best decision I ever made  .So in closing . All of us over fifty , need to reflect back on those times and welcome returnees with open arms and a truck-load of new suggestions and ideas . I will if I can ..     Tanker - Builder

For me it was only a short gap of non-modeling perhaps from age 34-41 I know it was other hobbies,golf,computers,also work and the absence of a dedicated hobby space in my apartment.But once I got a house with a workshop,and realized that I couldn't play golf,more time for modeling opened up.

For me, it was only a 5 year break, and not a welcome one. It began when I split from my now ex wife, I had all that mess to deal with. Then over the next couple of years things were not conducive to get back to modelling. But I knew I would and I made sure I kept everything. It wasn't until I had been with my current partner for 18 months that I felt able to get back to it. So my break, compared to most, was minimal.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

After 2001, I was lade off and needed to find a new job. I started in construction and those ended up being long days, then too tired to do anything, I went to bed. Soon we had to move to a new state and of course all that came with that. Again construction, but now I owned the business, Now came 2006 (when the economy really started going down). The housing and construction market just crashed. I could give a house away. I needed to pay the bills so I could keep my own house, so I got me a CDL and went truck driving all across the lower 48 (try building in a Simi cab after you drove for 11 hours). I'd come home for a couple of day and whoosh, gone again.

Finally in 2012, I found a job locally and finally had some time. I would look at all the models I had drug around with me and stored all those years and then look for all my tools and paint. I found most of my paint dried, the airbrush missing parts, and calculating the cost of replacement I decided to get out of the hobby. Besides, my RC airplanes, which were also laying around, were calling me.

I grabbed the first (and biggest) model I had at that time and sold it on eBay. I was a 1/32 Tamiya  F4. I was hart broken when I mailed it off, like loosing a pet. I decided to take that money, replace the bad paint, get a new airbrush and new glue. I fixed up an area in the garage (permission from the boss of course) and started to build again.

I Soon after I got a subscription to FSM and found the forum and haven't turned back since.

I still do fly RC, but not nearly as much. I don't find the camaraderie as close as is on this forum. And that's where the fun really lies.

I was out of the hobby from age 19 to 34. I just got busy and was pursuing other things. I found a tower hobbies magazine someone left at work, started looking through there and got right back in with a Tiger tank model. I was surprised..no shocked with all the kits, equipment, paints, etc. available. I find it helps me relax. Many times, I will turn off the cell phone, TV, and other distraction while at the bench.
