getting started
Posted by unclebill49 on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 8:27 AM
I'm just getting started and would appreciate any advice on which model air craft to start with. I have built remote control airplanes with a friend, but would like to get started in the plastic model kits(1/24 or 1/48 scale). I have collected (I hope) everything to get started (except an air brush kit). I am a beginner and love the WW2 military era aircraft. Thank you Bill

Welcome to the Forum!  Can't offer suggestions since I only do 1/72 scale, but lots of folks like the bigger scales around here, and will no doubt provide their assistance.

Welcome Bill  Welcome Sign

All you have to do is ask. Tons of experience and knowledge on here. And you not alone with the RC. A lot of us do that on the side as well.

Welcome to the forums Bill!  Glad to have you on board!

As for which aircraft to build......what ever you like!  You said you like WWII  (great subject, my favorite!), depending on how much you want to spend on your first kit, you have a huge selection to choose from!  Tamiya has some good kits.  The 1/48 P-47's are very nice.  Or grab you an old Monogram or Revell kit!  Can't go wrong with the classics!  Just remember, it's a hobby...have fun!

Welcome aboard.

Your best bet for into on kits is to decide which kit you want to build in which scale and start from there. All companies have good and bad kits, some more bad than good and some more good than bad. So it is best to take it on a kit by kit basis.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Bill, all the above info is correct.  Look around until you find a plane that you really like the looks of.  It will probably come in various scales so that will be your next choice.  Then, sit back and enjoy building it.  After that, each one you build will get better as you learn all the tricks of the trade as it were. Don't let any mistakes get you down.  Learn from them.  We all make them no matter how long we've been building.  If you have any questions or problems, just ask and the members will try to help you.

this is a roster of good model builders and posters.

i read an article a while back ( i don't do aeroplanes but that will change next year) that a way to build aircraft, say a ME-110, is to start with a 1/72. you will get the basics down and understand the construction. proceed to another and than a 1/48 and later a 1/32.

post lots of pics and don't hesitate to ask for help. we have all been where you are. take any critique seriously. any suggestion for improvement is sincere and that means ANY PRAISE IS ALSO SINCERE.

and have fun. we do even if some outsider watching us build would question that.
