Check out the Painting and Airbrushing forum, near the bottom of the FSM forums list.  That forum specializes in that sort of question.

Welcome to the gang! Testors sells a wet look clear lacquer paint in the spray can. It should be ok with the enamels, but test it for compatibility first. One issue with Testors enamels is that the gloss takes forever to dry. They have a line of lacquer paints that is composed of a two step system of color, along with the clear that I mentioned. They dry quickly, and the color line up is pretty extensive. You could probably decant it for airbrushing, and cut it with lacquer thinner, though I haven't gone that route. You will still have issues with orange peel from time to time; it seems to be the name of the game. Quite a few places sell polishing pads that go from 3400-12000 grit to smooth things out, so even if you end up with orange peeling, it's not a total loss.

Looking forward to seeing your builds!

Welcome to the Forums Chris!  Glad to have you aboard!

I personally stick to acrylic paints in my airbrush followed by a quick shot of airbrush cleaner then a bit of distilled water.  Cleanup only takes me about 1 minute total and then on to the next color.  I use Testors Dullcote for a flat finish or a craft acrylic called Clear Acrylic Sealer - Matte that I get at Joanne Fabrics (large 12 oz. spray can.  I don't usually do autos with gloss finishes because I haven't mastered the technique.  All my autos are street rods with flat black primer finishes or rusty finishes.

If you check the Painting section of these forums, you will be sure to get some better answers to your questions.  Hope that I helped a little.

Clear coating Enamels
Posted by cd3609 on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 6:55 AM

Greetings all,

I have always struggled with clear coat( orange peel or cracking), whether it be automotive Painting( orange peeling - I dabble in automotive body work), or scale modeling. Lately I have been using enamel testors paints because I dont like constantly picking water base paint off my needle and dealing with cleaning more than painting. Unfortunately, I am confronted with painting with gloss paint because I am not sure what I can use to clear coat the enamel testors paint that wont drag down the paint. With automobiles, It's a "paint system" using urethane base and urethane clears. I am unable to find a clear to coatmy testors enamel that is not laquer or acrylic based. What do you guys use?

Thanks in advance for the help.
