Getting back into the hobby after a very long hiatus
Posted by AuroraAirlinerLover on Sunday, December 6, 2015 7:28 PM

Hello everyone!  I've been buying a few airliner models off ebay over the last few months, and am ready to get back into the hobby after a 30-something year hiatus. As a kid, I loved the Aurora line of airliners.  Dad worked for Continental, and we were at LAX regularly.

Fast forward 30 something years, and I now have my mitts on 3 Aurora models.... a Continental 747, Braniff 747, and a Western 720.  Couple of issues.... they all have the original decals, and appear to be in decent shape, but are they OK to use, or will they disintegrate if I try to use them?  Can they be copied? If so, how so?

Another issue is scale.... of course Aurora couldn't do things the easy way and go with the common 1/144 scale.  The 747s are 1/156, and the 720 is 1/104.  Is there any source for windows and other detail decals in oddball scales?

Any and all info will be appreciated!

Welcome to the Forums!  Glad to have you aboard!

I'll try to help with a couple of your questions.  Don't know if the decals are OK or not but before you try to use them make a copy of them.  If they don't work, you will be able to print them out on an Inkjet printer on decal paper.  If you check out the Aircraft section of these forums, you can probably get a lot of help as there are a lot of very knowledgeable guys and gals on here and they are always glad to help anyone.

Welcome to the Forums! I remember those Aurora airliners. I used to buy everything they put out in Eastern Airlines livery.

Yep, box scale, kits engineered to fit in boxes of common or standard size, for shipping and display on store shelves.  Ah, the good old days! Big Smile  Seriously, though, Aurora is a favorite of mine, growing up in the 70s as I did.

Again, welcome, and get building!

Welcome Aurora, Welcome Sign

You may want to try Microscale Liquid Decal Film. It is supposed to help restore old decals by adding a thin layer of film over the old decals so they don't fall apart when you transfer them. Never tried the stuff myself but I do have a bottle.

I would copy them first though. EBay may have some decals for you in that scale if you’re lucky.

I enjoy airlines as well and am presently working on a 1/200 727 Braniff livery Ultra Blue, and will be starting a 1/144 727 Braniff livery Ultra Purple.
