Lurker no more
Posted by Krusty on Monday, January 11, 2016 12:48 AM

Hi everybody!  I've been an off and on scale modeler and forum lurker for the past eight years or so.  I thought it would be about time for me to sign up and actually participate.

Like a lot of you guys, I started modeling as a kid, but of course life got in the way. Sometime in my mid 20's the bug hit me again.  I've been building off and on again since.

I pretty much stick with aircraft, any era, though I have built a tank or two.  Currently I'm finishing up the Academy 1:72 P-51b, but I've hit a snag with the decals.  Got half of them on and noticed how terrible they are.  Thick and having a heck of a time getting them to conform, even with micro sol. I'm in the process of removing the ones I've applied and am awaiting some aftermarket ones in the mail.

Next up is the 1:72 Eduard L-39c Albatros.  I've got a resin cockpit ordered and will be my first time installing a resin pit and vac formed canopy.  Should be an adventure.  I'll be doing it in Armenian markings.

Anyway, I hope to start participating in this wonderfull forum.  May join a GB or two and show off my builds.

Thanks!

Welcome! Yes, Academy decals are some of the worst.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Welcome to the Forum! I've built a number of Academy planes over the years, and it's best to go after-market with the decals. They always seem to be thick and uncooperative.

Welcome to the Forums Krusty!  Glad to have you aboard!

You said the Albatros wll have your first resin cockpit.  Just in case you didn't know, make sure to wear a particle mask when cutting, filing, or sanding the resin as it is very bad for the lungs.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your builds.

And be sure to do plenty of test fitting. A lot of resin pits need the kit fuselage thinning to make them fit.

So I learned.. Bang Head

I'd built the same kit a few years ago and didn't remember the decals being so bad.  I guess my standards have changed.

Thanks!  Already did a preliminary test fit and will definitely need to thin the fuselage a bit.  I'm off work the next few days so I hope to get some work done on it.
