Hello, new to this site!
Posted by lazyfortress on Monday, May 2, 2016 5:59 PM

Hello!  I'm lazyfortress, and I've been modeling for about two years.  I love building Vietnam era and Gulf War era models.  My current build is 1/72 AC-130H, registration 69-6576, served during the late stages of Operation Desert Storm.

I got into modeling with a 1/32 M41 I got for my birthday, then to a Revell 1/72 T-90S.  Then I really got movin' with a 1/72 Italeri ISU-152, I made it into a ISU-152M with Egyptian camouflage.  Then came a few others, but my 1/72 T-34 100mm artillery is the most memorable.  I made it look like it was "knocked out".

My first aircraft model was a 1/72 Academy A-37B.  It is now hanging on my ceiling.  Then I got my 1/48 F-111C, which I am trying to convert to a F-111F, then came my OH-6A.  I haven't even opened my 1/72 OH-58D.

I have built one Formula 1, a 1/72 McLaren M23 from 1976.  I haven't opened my 1/20 Walter Wolf F1.

Then I got my 1/72 AC-130H, which I am currently building.  I'm working on the gun-control center.  The CRT monitor coloring is hard!  I scratch built the whole control-panel thing myself.

I hand-paint my models by the way.  How good is airbrushing?

My next build will be a M35 in the woodland camo, then a HEMTT in woodland camo, then two HMWWVs, one in woodland (IFOR), then one in desert.  Then I will be using a 1/72 CH-47D, along with a M102 howitzer, to make my first diorama.

Phew!  I've been talking a whole bunch.  I'm 13 by the way.  I'm probably the youngest here.

I never liked standard desert camo.  I always liked OD and woodland.  I like getting my model tanks I built and putting them in the grass outside to see how well they blend in.  Then I walk about 100 feet away from the model(s) to test their visibility.  It sounds weird, but it's awesome to me!Big Smile   AC-130H

By the way, my AC-130 is being painted exactly like above, which is the aircraft I'm trying to replicate (69-6576).

That's all, folks!

I meant 1/20 McLaren M23, not 1/72! That would be tiny.

Welcome to the Forums!  Glad to have you with us.

I'm not sure you are the youngest, but you definately one of them.  You've come to the right place.  There are many, many guys and gals on here that are very knowledgeable and can help you out if you have any questions or problems. Be sure to post pics of your models so we can see how you're doing.

I've been building models for 69 of my 75 years. I build whatever I see that I like. My avatar is one of the sailing ships that I've built. I just started using an airbrush about 4 years ago. Once you get the feel of it, you'll use it or everything except small details. If you want to find out more about airbrushing, go to the Airbrushing sub-forum on here.  You can always check out airbrushing models on u-tube too. Some great videos there.

Good luck.

Welcome aboard! It's great to have soem youthful new blood and your enthusiasm for the hobby here. There are several of us who share your interest areas of post WWII wars as well. Have fun and please share your work!

As far as airbrushing goes, you will really be amazed at what you can be done once you try using one yourself. Not knocking handbrushing because that is a perishable skill of its' own once mastered. Aibrushing just gives you another way to work and achieve results.

Welcome to the forums young sir!  It's great to hear the excitement for the hobby!  Great bunch of folks here more then willing to help out if you need it.  Be sure to post pics of your builds too.

As for the airbrush...I was the same way for a long time.  Then I got an airbrush!  A world of difference, you'll never go back once you try it out.  Start off with some kits and experiment with an airbrush, get used to it.  Won't take you long to get the hang of it.

Again...Welcome!

Welcome! It is wonderful to have you join us hear. You are going to find that your modeling skills and experience will be increased exponentially by the excellent folks that are here. Ask plenty of questions as everyone here is immensely helpful. I would love to see some pics of your builds posted on here.

I got my first airbrush when i was just a bit older than you. 15 I believe. I've never looked back. It changed my modeling forever.

Cheers, Joe
