Hello from Dallas
Posted by SpinnakerRob on Monday, June 27, 2016 3:58 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm glad to be a new member of this community. I was an avid modeler back in my teen years, especially sailing ships. Now that I'm retired, I've decided to continue the madness and see if I still like it. My first intrepid attempt was the little Constitution which was an interesting and helpful re-start after a hiatus of nearly a half century. Now its on to the big Connie the revell 1:96 kit. Looks a little more challeging. I was a bit disappointed to find ugly pre-formed rat-lines came with the kit, even though it was pictured with something much better looking. I think trying to make my own at this stage would just be beyond my capacity. If anyone knows where I can buy some good looking rigged ratlines for the big ship I'd greatly appreciate it.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to getting back into modeling and learning knew technigues and meeting you all.

Rob

Welcome to the Forums Rob!  Glad to have you aboard!

Also welcome to our friendly group of plasticaholics. It was inevitable that you returned to the hobby. Once bitten, never cured. I've been building for 69 of my 75 years and loved "almost" every minute of it.Wink I build whatever strikes my fancy and the wallet says OK. I've built a few sailing shps in my time as you can see by my avatar.

The members here are a great group that are very knowledgeable and ready, willing and able to help you with any questions/problems that you might have. So, sit back and relax with a few sips of your favorite brew whether it be CoffeeBeerDrinks, or Toast and build away.

Almost forgot, congrats on your retirement. Enjoy.

Welcome to the Forums Rob!  I don't know how new you are to the DFW area, but IPMS NCT meets in Irving, the second Sunday of the month.  We start about 1:00.  This month is our annual cookout and joint meeting with the local model car club at Senter Park East in Irving.  If you need directions, let me know.  Hope to see you there.

thanks Jim,

loving my retirement. Have had no problem filling the time. I always wanted to get back to modeling so I think there is something to that once bitten idea. I've also learned how to play the piano since I retired (well, after a fashion), but its been fun. And the wife has a never ending stream of "honey-dos" for me.

I have always been drawn to the tall ships and so thats my favorite to model. I also like tanks, but have only done a few of these.  So many models, so little time.

hey, there are a bunch of Texans on this board.

I'm up around the Plano area, you know Plan Zero. So much

construction going on around here, and the roads are always a work in progress it seems.

Its high nineties this week and dry. Summer's here.

Are you building anything at the moment?

Rob, the learning curve to build your own ratlines is not steep or difficult. When you have time, check out the Ships section of the forums. There are many posts on just that subject. The ratlines on the ship (The Scottish Maid)in my avatar were my very first attempt at doing them myself and turned out pretty well. I used fine thread and threaded it through the stays using a drawing taped behind them to get them spaced correctly. As an old fart with failing memory, I forget the correct names for the main lines but I think you get the idea. There are a lot of members on the ship site that can help you with ANY questions/problems you might have. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. I've learned a lot from them but sorry to say that a lot of the info tends to slip quietly away as I sleep. I got proof of that one time when I went to get an MRI for a problem I was having and the Doctor said that he didn't find anything between my right ear and my left ear. Wink

Good luck with your builds. Looking forward to seeing pics.
