Hello, I have questions.
Posted by The Jericho Initiative on Monday, July 4, 2016 1:48 PM

Hi,

I joined this forum because I got an airbrush and decided to try my hand at modeling again, it's bee something like 20 years since I've touched one.  I posted a new discussion topic a couple days back under ships but apparently it wasn't approved for some reason.

I'm a former submariner and my boat, the USS Albuquerque, was decommisioned last October and I'd really like to do a Los Angeles class boat in 1/192.  My thinking is that 20-24 inches of a 688 hull would look quite nice.  For whatever reason this is looking to be quite difficult to accomplish.  Apparently someone decided that when making a flat black tube, 12 inches long at 1/350 was the way to go... Which seems quite ridiculous to me, it's way to small.  Anyway, I know that over the years there have been a few in the scale I'm looking for but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm also curious about trains.  Not the electric G/O/HO trains people drive around a track, but nonfunctioning scale models of trains.  I've been poking around google for this as well but you can imagine my lack of success.

If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

Try to connect with Bill Morrison "warshipguy". I think he's a retired 688 boat guy and he certainly knows as much about submarines as anyone I've met.

Sometimes the more obvious decent subjects just escape the minds of the kit companies.

As for train models, have you looked at the Walthers website? I know that kind of thing is popular in card (paper) but no airbrushing there!

Welcome aboard!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Appreciate the direction.  Since I posted I've been somewhat obsessed with finding - Something - I'd be interested in.  I'm not interested in tiny models, and while I did not find what I wanted; I've gotten close.

I found a C62 Japanese Locomotive in 1/50 which should be interesting... It's a shame because there are so many gorgeous trains throughout our history and it seems unless you're interested in spending a thousand dollars and running electricity through it, no one is interested in them.

Additionally, found a 1/144 Seawolf by Trumpeter.  My primary assignment was a 688 but I did TAD to the Seawolf in 1997 for a few months networking it with Cat 3 and some NT workstations.  Not as good as my boat, but at least I served on in for a short time.

I'll send warshipguy a pm and see if he can point me in the right direction.  Seawolf's cool, but I'm a 688 sailor.

I still am not seeing a response I typed two days ago...  I have no idea this ridiculous post approval lockdown is going to last but I figure it would be better to post within my own thread than another's.

Mod:  If there is something I need to be doing, please let me know.  I've never encountered a forum anywhere that wouldn't even let you post in the 'welcomes and introductions' section.

Welcome,

Revell makes a sweet 1/87 scale Big Boy.

And Trumpeter makes a few Greman WW2 locos in 1/72 and 1/35

Welcome to the forums. I'm afraid I don't have much to offer in the way of assistance but, I certainly wish you the best of luck in finding what you are looking for.

You will get better responses in the proper forum thread. This thread is for introductions.

Hello and Welcome .

If you move over to ships and other threads , You can get answers to your questions . I am on the Board of a Rail Museum ,so I can help find a listing of Locos and cars world-wide .

As to the Non - Target type ships I too am at a loss . Scratchbuilding is often needed here . I find myself using a lot of PVC pipe and sheet plastic when I want an UnterSeeboot !   T.B.

Tanker - Builder,

Thanks.  I've already posted a thread in the ships section but it hasn't recieved much attention there... I guess modern submarines aren't visually complex enough to garner support for a larger scale.  It's too bad really because there is a massive amount of details omitted or plain wrong in the kits I have seen.  My 1/144 Seawolf arrives today and I'm going to completely rework the hull, sail, bridge, and jet pump propulsor.

As for scale locomotives, that would be fantastic if you could point me toward a larger size kit. I'd love to do a 1/48 or larger Berkshire, Hudson, T1, or any number of others.  The C62 that I've ordered should be entertaining.  I plan to reduce some of the moulded detail and fabricate it myself.

As for scratch building?  A bit beyond my reach at the moment.
