  Don't be feeling alone .There are many that are trying or are doing what most consider - over the top detailing . I have been for years . When I can remember all the steps I plan to post some of my Clean Bay Builds . You'll see . My motto for client's builds are if it is in the picture it will be there .

 Even a pair of drying blue jeans and a half cup of coffee on a chart on the bridge . Well , the ship was 1/48 scale and had twenty-six bridge windows and the client didn't want them frosted . So I spent a week detailing the bridge area . Oh , Welcome Aboard ! T.B.

jtroutt: Great to have you here! Don't worry about an X-acto blade at 8 years old. When my son was about that old I gave him some sprue cutters and showed him how to cut it as close to the sprue as possible and let 'em go. He had a blast (and still does when he wants to pick up some plastic again at 13) and I never had to worry about a blade. As he's older now I bought him an X-acto knife and he's pretty careful with it. I built model aircraft early on at 10 or so and remember cutting myself to the bone with a blade so I wouldn't recommend turning him loose with one just yet. It'll save you the worry and him the cuts. It's really good that you're teaching him about the hobby. Way to go dad!!!!

Appreciate the responses guys! I guess I can be a little over protective at first. There are a few things I think every kid needs to be taught and modeling is one of them! I never thought about building models for other people. How do you get into that? That would really cool to do!

Point here is that I am scared when my son handles an exacto blade while im instructing him.

I grew up on my Grandparent's farm, so I learned at an early age to respect tool's and large equipment ( my Grandfather "unleashed me" on his Bandsaw when I was 5 )

The thing to "know" about using an Xacto blade is to ALWAY'S cut in a motion moving away from you ( but even now, ... at age 51, ... I still knick myself once in a while ) And I can't tell you how many times I have cut a piece of wire, or photo-etched part, and sent a piece of it into my eye !    SAFETY GLASSE'S WORK ! You just gotta use em !

Haha. I had a piece of plastic go flying in my eye last night! I cut myself all the time more than most I can tell you that. I really enjoy modeling though. i usually use model master enamels. But have read some really good things about valejo acrylics. So I went and spent $150 today to get a decent collection of valejo paints. 

Next thing ink I gotta figure out is what i want to do next. So many options......
