Hello from NW Missouri - help please
Posted by Mac Fixx on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 9:46 PM

I never claimed to be the brightest light bulb on the tree. So for the 99.9% brighter than myself, what's the secret to uploading pix?  I'm unable to find instructions posted and cutting and pasting a jpg in the text, it doesn't take. (Tried in the test section)

Anyway, I'm an OCD diorama builder and a fly on the wall often buzzing around Youtube: Laser Creation World, Plasmo, Night Shift, and Will Pattison. Pretty much any topic/medium is fair game as long as it isn't shiny.

I'm big into dumpster diving and repurposing "guts" from junk like old printers, appliances, etc, and push myself hard to create realistic machinery and structures on their last legs. "Apocolypse imminent" kind of feel.

If uploading pix can be figured out, constructive criticism (aka - consider "x" to make "y" more realistic) is GREATLY appreciated.

  Thank you.

Welcome aboard. As with most forums, you need a 3rd party hosting site for your pics. There are plenty out there, just avoid Photo Bucket.

Welcome Sign

Like Bish said, you need a third party hosting site like Imgur, Imageshack, Postimage, Flickr and so on. Some cost, others don't. The free ones may have adds and such which may or not bother you. I use Imageshack and never had any problems but there is a yearly fee. Avoid Photobook! We don't trust them anymore after being free, then holding our photos hostage until we paid hunderds of dollars. They've long since resended that policy but put a watermark on you photos now. We don't trust them!

The reason you need a third party hosting site is because FSM, or any modeling forum for that matter, can't afford all the server space it would require to store all the pictures for years, thus an outside hosting site that does that. After establishing a site, you will be able to copy the link that your site provides and paste it after opening the Edit Image icon (the icon that looks like a mountain with a sun). This may take some practice but it works, in fact, all forms require this method.

Hello!

Welcome aboard!

Some time ago I have created a SBS on picture posting, you can see it here:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/tools_techniques_and_reference_materials/f/23/t/173194.aspx

And Steve - at least soem forums start to allow uploading pictures to their servers, for example modelwork.pl. Server space is getting cheaper every day while new compression methods emerge making storing pictures more effective. Regrettably our hosts here seem to be falling behind the technological progress - this will drive people to other forums where it is easier to upload pictures.

Getting back to technicals - you don't post pictures on these forums, you post LINKS to the pictures. So the first trick is to put the picture SOMEWHERE on the net, then get a link to it and then post it here.

Hope it helps - looking forward to seeing your work and have a nice day

Paweł

All comments and critique welcomed. Thanks for your honest opinions!

Thank you.

Having to utilize a photo hosting site is a disappointment.  But what in life isn't (at least at times)?   Suck it up and make the most of it, spit it out if found poisonous before it kills you, or just abstain from day one and don't look back.

I look at it like I have a quicker acces to them that way. I also post my builds on Facebook and Pintrest as well as other forums. That way they will always be out there even after I'm gone.

I prefer useing a hosting site, makes it a lot easier when posting builds on different forums and also means i can access them when away from my comp. Airfix recently switched to being able to download sites direct from your computer and i found it a right PITA. One of the reasons i stopped posting builds there.
