Pratice Pratice Pratice.

What I did years ago when I first got a airbrush is use some old kit I had already trashed and praticed overspraying and and adjusting the needle for desired effect. Good luck!

Well as you can tell from my intro I'm new again also. Picking up my kit and seeing the results of time with my waterbased flats compaired to the enamel finish I'm going to go purely enamel for now on. But on the condition that I'm open for suggestions from someone who has more experiance and more up to date knowledge of what's out there.

We both are in a learning curve right now!

Ditto, I"ve liked large scale Military Aircraft, saw a 1:48 scale B1 once and was really thinking about buying it but held off. Once I finish this 1:24 scale Mustang I think I'll go looking for it again.

Also thinking of trying my hand at some of the WW1 crates. Maybe if thngs workout well trying a wooden frame and actually cover it with some material, perhaps leave a cutaway view around the cockpit. REally haven't thought that far ahead right now.

Also eyballing that new 1:72 scale Gato class sub that's out, I understand it's new, and BIG!

Welcome to the Forums Sign - Welcome [#welcome].  I use enamels because that's what I grew up with, but many modelers prefer acrylics.  Try them both & see what works best for you.

How do you handle a wash? I've never done one before even though modeling for years. Never heard of it but when I stopped there was no internet to speak of. I like the enamels better also but reading and some experimenting show enamal on enamel wash doesn't produce the expected result.

Enterprise,

Welcome to the Forums!

I prefer acrylics. Like most people, I started with enamels (Humbrol tinlets and Testors little square bottles) but a friend turned me on to Tamiya acrylics 15 or so years ago and I haven't looked back. I like the easy cleanup, low fumes, and quick working times. But that's a personal preference and it took me some time to convert and I needed to practice until I was comfortable.

well usually with a wash if your base coat is enamel the best way to do wash is use the wash out of acylic or artist paints. and alot of people actually put a gloss coat on the base coat before they do the wet wash so it fills and runs better. i hope that helps without goin to indept with it

Thanks. I slapped together a cheapo F18 1/72 and put a base coat enamel silver on it last night. I'll put a clear coat or Future on today and try a wash later. Not trying to make this model look good but get the technique down. Then I'll turn back to the big ol' P-51.
