Hello
Posted by Haligan on Sunday, November 11, 2007 6:58 PM

Hello Everyone,

I have been checking out the Forums for a while now and I have started my very first (not snap together) airplane.  I hope to someday be as good as everyone I've seen post so far.  This airbursh thing is HARD!  Anyway, I look forward learning from furture friends.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I am looking forward to a little time off so I can work on my Zero.  The kit isn't that great, but it is my first plane and I'm doing my best.  Thanks for the help Daywalker!  Should I be worried about shady characters?  I wasn't until you brought it up...Anyway, Thanks again for the welcome!

Welcome Aboard!

The airbrush thing isn't hard, it just takes a little getting use to. I was a master with a rattle can so long ago a fellow modeler encouraged me to take the step to airbrushing. He said if you can spray a rattle can well, you can airbrush even better. True.

Modelers tend to be in a hurry once they acquire an airbrush, wanting to try it out on a model. True. What I recommend is just practicing on paper first with cheap acrylic paint. Using a marker or pencil draw some lines, squares, tiangles and outlined letters on a piece of paper (hung on a wall or other vertical surface). Load up the brush and practice following lines, filling in the shapes and letters. Experiment with distances from the surface, air pressures and tips if yours has the capability. Even pick up a coloring book and do the coloring with your airbrush. In short course you'll be comfortable with it, enough to start on a model. The airbrush should be an extension of your hand. Practice make perminant. Give it a whirl.

Thanks for the tips Hawkeye!  I will try the coloring book idea when I get home on Sunday!  Sounds like fun and maybe I can reduce my overspray with some practice.

Thanks again and have a great weekend!!

Count me in as a shut-in but I'm not a man.

Most of us have a number of irons in the fire.  Nothing like having a dozen projects going at the same time.

What would you guys consider a good starter FAA plane?  Remember STARTER!  I still have someone help me mix paint.Blush [:I]

Guess it depends on what your preferences are for aircraft, Katie! If no preferences (other than easy) maybe i might suggest an F-9F Panther. Was one of the first few carrier borne jets that flew in Korea. Just one solid color overall (dark blue) so you wouldn't have to worry about any color transitions or dual tone schemes. But part of the fun is deciding what you would like to build! Ya oughta stop over in the FAA GB and get involved. On the first post of that thread it has the rules listed and the guys are always willing to give advice! You'll love it there...Thumbs Up [tup]

I would have to say the Panther, but did the FAA fly them?  My vote goes with the all blue Corsair or the Phantom.

I dunno! I thought i had seen one in British markings once, but Wikipedia doesn't have it listed as an FAA aircraft. Unless the list i'm looking at is wrong, maybe it was a different aircraft?Confused [%-)]

What do you guys think of the Hellcat?  I have seen one of those in an all-blue scheme.

Good to go! And if i remember correctly, the Fleet Air Arm had some of those too!

Looking forward to seeing progress on your build, Katie!

The Hellcat, Wildcat or the Corsair would be great.  My vote would be the Corsair.
