Thanks for the welcome everyone. I am going to continue to research for the exact kit that I want to build and will let you all know.

Are there any good books to start off with as far as advanced tecnhiques go?

Thanks

 John

I know there's plenty out there that are really good! And it sure doesn't hurt to have as many sources as possible. But i've found that pretty much anything you can think of can be found step by step in the forums. I'd also recommend Swanny's Website too (He's a fellow poster here too)

Hey all,

I am new to the forums here.  On a business trip, I ran across a copy of Fine Scale Modeler and it re-kindled my interest in plastic scale models.  I was so impressed as to the quality and detailed builds that were featured in the magazine and I thought that I would like to try a build far beyond anything that I have ever tried.

A little bit of back ground.  I am pretty much solely interested in race cars.  I am a complete race nut, especially open wheeled racing.

I have built some faily clean and detailed models in the past.  Most recently being Tamiya's MotoGP Honda RC211V Repsol of Valentino Rossi and the William BMW FW26(?) of Montoya.  Both builds included kit only as at the time, I was unaware of the detail and "scratch" parts available.

I am also an experieced RC Car builder and racer.

In short, I feel that with the right amount of patience and time, I can pull off a sucessfull project of a new F1 car.....but.....

Where do I start?

I am looking at kits and I am leaning towards the Tamiya McClaren Mercedes MP4 13 as I really like the quality of the Tamiya Kits.

I no longer have any model building specific tools other then my X-ACTO knife that I use for RC Racing, as well as my supply of RC tools including jewerly sized screw drivers/pliers etc.

What new tools are out there?  How about diffent types of cement?  In the past, I have only used the bacic testor model cemet and putty.

I was reading on line someone else's build up of a Ferrari F2001 and once again, simply amazed by the detail.

I guess my real problem is that I do not know what resourses are out there that I can learn from before I start.  Stuff like different techniques/more advanced techniques that I could try.   Terms like photoschetched and where people find custom decal etc.

Any advise on how to start and where to start would be appreciated as I really don't know where to begin.

My time line would be to start the build in 2008 and complete it in a year!  Does this sound reasonable?

Sorry, I know this is a lot!

 Thanks
