Welcome to the site, Megan. As for your question about whether to paint on the sprue before modeling or to paint after completion is up to the individual modeler. I myself have done it both ways. There is less to "touch up" if you paint near completion as opposed to pre-painting. (this is entirely my opinion as I am known by my family to be an occassional clutzSign - Oops [#oops]).

Gday and welcome Megan

Pics!  We need pics!  Even if it's photos of the sprues.  Here's another aussie female modeller's handiwork (my wife):

Cheers everyone for the warm welcome,

PapaJohn, I'm glad you know what a "roo" is, though i've been in australia for five years now, i have only just seen a kangaroo for the first time - at the zoo..  Unfortunately they don't jump down the main street like I thought previous to moving here! Laugh [(-D]

Following the advice of someone that has maybe never made a plastic model Wink [;)], i've been painting my planes while still on the sprue.  After surfing the web and seeing a few tutorials on painting/air-brushing, i've gathered that it's the norm to paint once the model is complete (i'm talking about the main body of the model).  Is this the most efficient way to paint things?

Morning all,

I think I may be one of your few female members! Smile [:)] just a feeling I get when stalking through the forums.  I'm a kiwi living in exile in Perth, Australia, and almost brand new to model building. I find myself drawn to WWII aircraft mostly, but am willing to try anything from this era.  It's great to see the kind of support given to members on this forum, I look forward to having questions for you all to help me with Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Megan, Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forum.  We're not crazy around here, it is just mayham directed in a positive approach.  I believe everyone will agree with me the idea is to Have Fun.  I have found each and every member of the forums to be knowledgeable and friendly, just ask and they will help.  Big Smile [:D]

Never have been down that way and probably never will, but have read about your find country.  I was enlightened in one article that I read in a motorcyle magazine and now know what is meant by the saying,  "There was a roo." Big Smile [:D].  Wonder if anyone else in the forum does Laugh [(-D].  Just a crazy Canuck trying to make humour, don't hold it against me.Laugh [(-D]

Again welcome from one plasticholic to another one.
