Most people would believe that it's somebody like this guy that deserves to be called the top flying ace of all time:
Well, there's at least one other out there that puts Erich Hartmann to shame. And that is ...... the Ruby Throat Hummingbird. They make more kills EVERYDAY while on the wing than Hartmann could've ever dreamed of achieving in his entire lifetime as they catch many times their own weight in insects every day. And flying skills? Ever see a ME109 or Fw190 stop in mid-air and change direction, fly backwards then hover? All in the blink of an eye? No. The title of top flying ace needs to go to the Hummingbirds.
If any of you guys out there put out Hummingbird feeders and are having trouble with ants getting in the feeder, which will fowl the food, I have a simple solution.
The Ant Moat.
Mine, pictured here, is just a PVC end cap that I drilled a hole through. Then I inserted a threaded eye-hook with a nut on each side of the cup and a ring beneath it. Use a little sealer on both sides and fill with water. Since most ant species will not cross water, when the ants are trying to get to the feeder and they go down the hook, when they reach the water it's the end of the road for them. No more Hummingbird food tainted with rotting ant carcasses.
And, always remember: Never add ANY coloring to your Hummingbird food, and to use only white granulated pure cane sugar and water.
