Sears selling kits online
Posted by BarrettDuke on Saturday, May 31, 2014 7:32 AM

Those of you can't get to a LHS (These folks need us to buy from them as much as possible.) or can't afford the prices at Hobby Town, may want to check out sears.com. They appear to be trying to serve as an aggregator for multiple kit manufacturers. Just type in what you're looking for or do a general search in "Toys and Games" and you may find a deal. I noticed many items ship for free, which means you can pay a little more for the product and still match or beat some other suppliers. The prices are all over the place so you have to be careful and still do your due diligence on price comparisons, but it may be worth including them in a search.

I've seen that.........some prices are good ( saw a decent price for a 1/96 Revell Constitution) , some average.

Still........one advantage is that it is not limited to Revell kits.

If we're lucky, they'll start selling house kits again.

Would be nice...........they had some nice styles.

And Sears sells all the tools needed to assemble the house kits.Yes

Kit houses using modern technology might even be partlally factory assembled like those the Japanese build............and a self contained, off the grid house would really be nice.Big Smile

OTOH.............I can also imagine the regulations and taxes that didn't exist pre-1940 being imposed these days..............Hmm

There are plenty of good online retailers if you don't have easy access to a LHS. I have my favorites bookmarked, have for ages.

Checked out sears website and found they have 3 Hobby Boss kits (all 1/700th scale):

Akula Class Russian Attack Submarine - $9.15

USS SSN-21 Seawolf Attack Submarine - $9.05

Easy Build U-Boat Type IX C - $9.29

Noticed underneath each kit the Marketplace is listed as Sold by Hobby Warehouse 2? I'm guessing it's a distributor for Sears?

I never figured Sears actually has physical possession of the merchandise.

You'll find the same thing with many online retailers. Newegg (computers and parts) also lists tools, household goods, and various other items for sale. If you look at the listings they'll say "sold by [insert company name here]" on all but the computer and some electronics stuff.

Sure. They just set up a revenue sharing deal. If someone purchases through them, they get some prearranged percentage. Anyone can make money like this on the Internet if you can cut a revenue sharing deal, and they aren't that hard to get. Lots of web sites sell books like this. They are basically serving as middlemen, taking their cut for connecting a customer with a supplier. The problem is that you need a lot of traffic to make enough money to pay for your own overhead and hassle.
