A tad is a wee bit larger than a skosh.  Now then, we need to know what a "wee bit" is,  for that to be definitive.

It's the opposite of "mondo" which means "absolutely HUGE", as in "that was MONDO cool!".

So :

A tad is that minute amount that the parts are out of alignment that you can't correct because it's so small any attempt to improve the fit just makes it worse.

Oh, I meant TDY as a regular thing, not just for getting in trouble, as in Gunny Bob telling another Jarhead on Glenview NAS that "Cpl Rex is going TDY to Yuma, again" (Cpl Rex and Gunny Bob sharing the same last name, lol)

I have the benefit of understanding both North and South, I was born and lived in Wisconsin, and moved to Tennessee 22 years ago (or 23?),,,,,so I understand both places (well, about 3/4 of the southern things, but, I am getting there)

TarnShip you must live in the North, I never heard em described that way.  We'uns don't spell "Smidgeon " that way neither.  We just have one term connected with saw blades-------"I cut er half in two"--- which refers to wood, metal, plastic and fingers and limbs.    I guess TAD reads the same, In my day that meant you were doing Kitchen duty or was sitting in lock-up after a rough weekend.  I guess thats Temporary Detachment.  We never said TDY, we just said Sarge caught me.  We knew that meant Temporary Detachment.

a TAD the distance between your fingertips and the the saw blade when you miss, and keep your fingertips

a Smidgeon is the amount you saw-burned off when the saw blade touches your finger tips, and you keep your fingertips

a "big ole honkin' chunk" is the tiny amount of your fingertips cut off when you hit deeper than just a saw burn,,,,,,,,,in reality, it is a very tiny amount, but gets described as "big ole honkin' chunk" when the same story keeps getting told, over 30 years later

(TAD is also a term for Temporary Detachment with either another Unit or at another location,,,,,although we always said TDY back in the seventies)

Here in Podunkville it depends what you are doing.  If yer makin' Likker its the amount of Kerosene you add to the mix.  If yer cooking or canning veggies, its the same amount as a Pinch, Schmidgen, Mite or even what you can hold twixt yer thumb and finger.  Otherwise, its the amount of Gas you can buy for $20.
