The following two puzzlers have nothing to do with modeling, but they came to mind when I was typing a post in the Ships forum. I've tripped up dozens of college students with them. If you don't like such things, feel free to quit reading.
1. An old-fashioned LP record is spinning on a turntable. (Remember those?) It turns at 33 1/3 rpm. From beginning to end the record plays for 23 minutes. The record is 12 inches in diameter. The label in the middle is 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
How many grooves are on that side of the record?
2. A two-volume set of books is sitting on a shelf. The books are placed in the normal way, as any librarian would put them. The pages of Vol.I are 1 1/2 inches thick. The pages of Vol. II are 1 3/4 inches thick. Each of the handsome leather covers is 1/8 inch thick.
Along comes a bookworm, named Basil. Basil starts at the very first page of Vol. I and munches his way through to the very last page of Vol. II.
How far has Basil gone?
i'll check occasionally for answers. The first right ones get to split a collection of antique pop sickle sticks.
