Now that I'm here, where am I??
For a minute I thought it was the background story for the movie "1942".
That has been speculated...
A good story about the F-89. A Curtiss C-46 was towing a target. Four Scorpions circled around and lined up for runs at the target. Much to the horror of the crew of the Commando, they'd been mistaken for the target.
One by one, all four aircraft launched all of their rockets, 104 each. They all missed.
In the debrief, the captain was the last guy in.
"What did you do when you realized what was happening?".
"I closed my eyes".
"That's what the rest of the crew said, too".

mississippivol For a minute I thought it was the background story for the movie "1942".
Closer to "Blast From the Past" than "1941".
But "1941" was based off of these events (with artistic/comedic license)
"The Great Los Angeles Air Raid"

and I-19's War Patrol in the area of Los Angeles Harbor in December 1941 shortly after the Pearl Harbor Attack

'unguided' 'nuclear' 'missle'
Gene Beaird,

G. Beaird,
Can you imagine the insufferably smug reaction of the Air Force brass when they had to be called on to "clean up the Navy's mess"...and the kind of humble pie they had to consume when it didn't quite work out as planned? A bad day to be an officer having any part in the whole shebang, I'm guessing.
