Personally I could care less about what any on air personality has to say about this hobby. Nowadays I find most of them to be babbling idiots filling up the time between too many commercials and not enough music. Talk radio of any sort is even worse. No thank you. Fortunately we have now plenty of options to surround ourselves with whatever sounds we prefer, without having to listen to such fools.

As far as Tiger goes, I am not into golf, but after learning about him being a model builder, his stock just went up in my book. He likes Van Halen, and he builds models. Sounds like an OK guy to me. Maybe he could be the next Peter Jackson and start another model company in whatever his preferred subject interest area is that is not served well enough by the model companies out there.

Well I find their comments to be offensive and derogatory. Anything else said, listeners would have called in to complaint about such childish statements. I guess we are in a minority.

I bet you there are a few film, tv and sports stars that are into some sort of modeling. I remember the HUGE electric train collection Frank Sinatra had that I saw on one interview at his home. There is a film star who is into naval model ships but can't remember his name right now.

Pete Waterman, a British music producer, is well known as a train fanatic, both real and model ones. has a huge set up at home. Rod Stewart is also a model train fanitic. As was peter Selers and is Roger Daltry.

And lets not forget the movie industry. Where would Star wars and Star Trek have been without model makers.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Some people are just ignorant. Don't be too quick to point at jocks though. I played football, basketball, and baseball in high school, and built models in the summer (when I wasn't working). Three things are certain...death, taxes, and stupid people saying stupid things.

It was the sports junkies on 106.7, so it was a discussion amongst the four of them.  The only reason they were commenting on it was because of the Tiger Woods angle.  They love to criticize Tiger so that just gave them one more thing to criticize about him that they didn't know about him before.

There's certainly a few reasons to criticize Tiger, but to go off like that because he likes to build models I thought was a bit ridiculous.

Sports junkies. Says it all as far as I'm concerned.

And, not sure how making fun of them is any better than them making fun of us?  I mean come on guys, we build little tanks and paint toy soldiers and people think that's nerdy - let it be!  And people have criticized scale modellers as 'war mongers' for years - so what?

Some Dj's comments are not going to change people's perception and I couldn't care less.  Now, back to modelling Smile !!!

The absolute worse thing anyone could do is to allow themselves to somehow feel persecuted or demeaned by it. Honestly, there is such a sickening "Persecution Complex" syndrome in America--eveyone is a victim, everyone is being persecuted or insulted or demeaned in some way, whether true or not.

Yes, there is still definitive persecution, racism, bigotry in America and we know -- you KNOW where and what it REALLY is --- but these days it seems you can't make a wry comment about anyone or any thing without someone feeling persecuted about it.

I'm the biggest, socially-awkward geek out there, and yes, I have, on occasion,  ********'ed in my mom's cellar as well. There it is. I said it. Kinda....sorta...Fire away...Surprise

Hey, these guys are still talking about Tiger Woods---who's the real fools?

I don't care hard enough about what others think and/or say, to be bothered by it. As I said before...I do sit in my basement, in my underwear(sometimes), nerding out at my bench, and I really don't care a lot to be around others with any kind of regularity...and I talk about it with total strangers on the internet!

So, I do find those comments kinda funny!

I am a nerd/dork, and I'm okay with that....I'm also a pretty darn cool guy...the coolest I know....if I do say so muhself!Propeller

Tiger Woods builds model airplanes....cool.  I knew there was something I liked about that guy, besides his golf game.

Bob Gibson, hall of fame pitcher for the Saint Louis Cardinals builds model kits. I don't want to say he was tough, but it was said he had four pitches, fastball, curve, slider and brushback. No one rushed the mound on him. Bob Gregory Ruining one kit at a time.

Yes he was!  I would not want to have stood in against him.  He owned that plate, and let no one forget it!

Mel Torme was also a scale modeler, as was Ken "Captain Parmenter" Berry, for just a couple off the top of my head.

Here is the definitive answer to this thread.

The Wright Brothers built model airplanes.

Every student in aero/astro at MIT  built model airplanes and still do.

Everyone at JPL built model airplanes

The team building the Mars mission built model airplanes.

I'm  pretty certain I could tie those dj's into an intellectual pretzel  of embarrasment in about 30 seconds.

I can do advanced stochastic calculus in my head... and I build model airplanes.

Neil Young saved Lionel.

Johnny Cash collected Lionel.

The man was definitely not a nerd.

Frank Sinatra collected Lionel...any one who laughed at him was sleeping with the fish.

I'm happy to hear that Tiger enjoys our hobby.  I'm glad he has something to entertain himself besides golf, and.... that other thing he's known for.

While it's horrible to have that sort of a narrow minded view, and there was a time I would get wound up around the axle about what others said, I developed a mantra "the opinions of others are non of by business" They can think what they want, but I don't have a high opinion for DJs.

Fermis, I think you are one of the coolest guys around too.

Some time back I'd heard on the radio that a study was done on people who built plastic model airplanes. They found that kids who did, fared far better in school than their classmates who didn't build; mostly due to their ability to foresee problems and work them out better, as well as follow instructions better. They also determined that anyone susceptible to Alzheimer's had a 50% chance of not contracting the disease; and if they did, it developed 40% slower than in people who didn't build models.

Based on that part about doing well in education; I'm guessing that's why those DJs weren't capable of thinking well; they didn't build models to see how stupid their comments were.

Tom Berenger also 'plays' with little toy soldiers as he's an avid wargamer. He even has a huge tabletop war game set up in his office. This means he also builds models that fit on his wargame tables.

I think we all are in good company. It's too bad we can't get some of these celebrities to join some local clubs somewhere, sometime. Oh well.

I was not one of those kids. School and me did not really get along. I was bored outta my gourd and did just enough to get through it. However, I do firmly believe that I can attribute many of the abilities I have now to building models. Mainly in the figuring out/problem solving areas. The biggest thing I have learned/gained from it is...when I come across a problem...ask how CAN I, and just let the brain go. "I don't know how" and/or "I can't" will stop your brain from figuring things out.
