How Do I Get More Views and Replies On My Build Thread?
Posted by B-1 CrewCheif on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 12:23 PM

Ok, now i know this seams like a dumb question but i mean it in all seriousness. Im in the middle of the biggest and most chalenging build ive ever done so far. The Revell 1:48th B-1B. You can find the post in the aircraft section on this site if you want to know more.

But with such a challenging build its hard to keep motivation sometimes and right now i need it more than ever as this will be presented at IPMS Nationals this year. I posted the build on here to see if i can get some good replies on it which would give me more motivation to do more and keep going. First post, got a lot of good replies, second post, one reply, now im on my 3rd post and i havent gotten one reply. What am i doing wrong? Why am i not getting any replies now. Is the build just not very interesting?

Any help on how i could improve would be great.

Thanks for reading.

Considering you've already have 13 replies and 622 views, you're doing fine. What more can you ask for?

I've seen folks leave face book groups in a huff because they didn't get the amount of "likes" they thought they should have. It's a generational issue.

To answer the original question, did you start a new post each time or just respond to your original one and keep expanding. I notice that this site enjoys the threads that go on and on for 20+ pages. If you start a new post, folks might not feel the need to reply, but if you keep expanding the original post, folks who responded may feel like they are vested in it and keep replying.

Personally, when I am pressed for time, I click the "your discussions" link and see what posts are still active that I have already replied to.

I don't spend a lot of time in the Aircraft section so I posted no views or comments, but I just checked it out and your build is impressive.

One thing I did notice going thru your thread was that you never thanked or engaged any of the posters, you simply went to the next phase of your build. That would turn me off if I had posted.Perhaps an overall thank you if not thanking each poster,or just a little conversation when they mention something.

It's a problem that's been discussed here, lots of views,no comments or encouragement, research and answer a question,no reply or thank you.It could be discouraging,I always try to acknowledge someone who comments on my build or answers my questions. Not perfect but I try.

Also if I needed people on forums to motivate me to keep me going,I wouldn't be building.

I have to agree with what Tojo says about ackowledging those who do comment. I have seen this quite often when people simply carry on with the build.

I know it can seem a bit discouraging when you don't get many comments. But i think it comes down to a number of factors. Some people only reply if the build is in their chosen scale. Some may only post if the build is of a subject they are intrested in or from a country or time frame they enjoy.

My current build has been running for a month and has had 16 replies, 8 of which are mine. But i am building and posting for myself and if only one person comments then its worth the effort.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yeah I know the feeling, I ran my first WIP a year ago and almost dropped it when I felt like I was giving a speech in an empty room. Couple of nice guys did pop up then to tell me they were following along.

I don't what to tell you. As Bish said subject matters a lot. If it's something popular like a P-51 or Bf-109 you'd probably get a lot more comments.

I've never done a WIP build but I admire those who can and do.  My builds are usually so slow that I'm not sure I'd be doing anyone a service by posting one.

I built that huge B-1 maybe three years ago for my brother-in-law who was in the USAF.  It was a good build but it gave me fits here and there.  I guess I'm still "recovering" from building it.  To see someone else tackle that behemoth AND with all the aftermarket stuff on top of it makes me feel exhausted all over again.  Odds are, I'll never build another 1/48 B-1 ever again and I'm not one to use any aftermarket stuff on my builds.  As a result, I haven't really been following the WIP posts.  Please note that it is not a reflection of you our your efforts!!!!  As the old saying goes, "It's not you.  It's me."

I concur with all that has been said. When I do a WIP thread I notice it starts with a bang and drops off. The first responses are something like “Hey that’s great I always wanted to build one of those! I’ll be watching” and that’s exactly what they do. I figure they’re interested but just don’t have anything to add other that “looks good”. You can only do that a couple of times before it gets monotonous. I know members are watching and that’s good enough. When I ask a question I may get 1 or 2 responses, again the others may not have an answer or the answers given covered what they were going to say.
I haven’t seen your thread but will go look. The B-1 looks like a fun build although I’m not really into modern aircraft. My biggest problem is I only have a couple of times a week where I can look through the threads. Most of the time I just look at the “My discussions” section or stumble on the “latest post” like I did for this one.

Well it does work two ways. An example would be our man Toshi. He probably gets the most comments. There are several reasons. He does good work. He is humble and polite. He personally thanks everyone who commented on his work. He comments on everyone elses work. We all should take lessons from Toshi.

I try to follow his example. Speaking for my self, this is a social forum above all else. Comments are part of the medium. I learn and ask questions. I comment on others good work and skill. I'm pleased when others comment on my meager work and ideas. It does encourge me to do better. It also entertains me talking to like minded people. It's a social thing.

Anyway, your project is looking good and your work, top quality. I've commented once, still watching and I'm looking forward to the final. More comments to come.

And there is my comment today, to all my social friends on the Forum!Smile

You are missing out on a whole lot of what makes face book a good place. I've been able to keep in touch with high school and college classmates, my college aged kids, my veteran son now living in Germany. We were able to watch the Super Bowl "together" (I raised my children to be fans of my native New England Patriots).

Yes, face book is a breeding ground for ignorance and false news, but you can filter out those things.

WIP are good threads. I often follow them weekly, but do not reply. I find that if all you do is say "good job" the thread gets cumbersome with dozens of similar responses. I also find that if you make constructive comments, you often get scolded by other members.

So I limit my comments to questions that might arise when I look at photos; asking how they did this or that, what kit is it, did you use some aftermarket, etc.

I took a look at your thread. You’re getting some great responses, and more than I usually get. I would say that you may need to respond in kind to those who comment. Your kinda leaving them hanging.

Yes it is important to acknowledge comments .Tosh is popular because he is polite and gracious and generally a cool person who happens to be an excellent modeler.I will check out your bone build and see what's what.

Hi,

I know that I tend to view alot of posts, especially works in progress, but being a relative newcomer around here, and kind of just a basic level builder at best, I find that I don't usually comment on alot of threads unless I have something specific to contribute (like trying to answer a question or recommendation), or perhaps a very occassional comment on something that really caught me attention.

I think maybe its just human nature that while some people may really like what they see, they may not feel comfortable speaking up if they feel that they aren't really adding anything specific to the conversation.

Please don't get discourages because I have enjoyed watching your build and reading some of the tips and techniques you've demonstrated.

Indeed. In the long run, comments are a two way street. At the very least, take the time to say thank you to the individuals who posted them and took the time to do that, instead of just looking and leaving. If somebody asks a question, an answer goes a long way to generating more responses. Unfortunately the last revamp of the forum does not let you quote multiple people on one post, or even allow you to look back at all previous replies at one that you may choose to address while doing so, but when there is a will, there is a way.

On a thread by a different builder here, I pointed something out to the original poster regarding their build: artistic license vs. reality. Not a peep in response regarding the critique. Why give feedback if it is not going to be acknowledged? I realize that once a build is completed, that a builder will likely not go back and fix a gaffe on the level pointed out. But a simple response to say something like, "how did I miss that?", or "thanks for that information" shows not only the respondent but also the silent readers who may think of responding in the future that they are not wasting their time with that person if they choose to do so.

But with such a challenging build its hard to keep motivation sometimes and right now i need it more than ever

I can certainly relate. There have been times during my own WIP that I felt like I was talking to an empty room. What I have learned over time is what many here have already mentioned:

1. Not everyone is interested in that particular genre, and that they don't even know about the WIP because they don't go there.

2. Not everyone has a technical comment to share. At best, they can offer a comment of good job. Like others have mentioned, those can get old, and that can even detract from the flow of the WIP if it gets too out of hand. I welcome any comment, but I have seen some WIPs where I begin to lose interest if there is too much of the atta boys going on.

3. Though people may not be commenting all the time, they are watching, and from the occasional comments that I get, I have learned that they are enjoying the WIP none the less. That makes it worthwhile to me. That, along with some of the fantastic advice and guidance that I get.

And yes...it is REALLY important to acknowledge the people that comment. I can tell you from my own experience that I have felt somewhat put-off when I comment to someone's WIP and they don't bother to acknowledge back. I don't usually comment to those WIPs again.

Lastly, I checked your build and I have to say that it looks awesome! I love that plane and that scale has to offer some interesting challenges. Having said that, this is about all that I can say. I have nothing technical that I can offer.

Keep up the good work!

Steve

I'd be very interested in a B-1 build.  I was unaware of it.

Keep up the excellent work. I look on the forums a lot, but i don't often comment.  Honestly, that is the way people are.  I belonged to a photograghy group that met once a month, but we got very few comments on posts on our website

We should all do a better job.  If someone takes the time to post, we should acknowledge that.

Not everyone that looks at a post leaves a response. Most people look and move on to something else.

As previously mentioned, the lack of acknowledging comments will turn off most so I make it a habit to thank the posters for taking the time and effort.
