Do they not take PayPal? I went by but frankly I'm a little leery about tossing my credit card number out there.

 

I had to use my name for credit card verification, but posted it as "anonymous", but sent a message to Carolyn giving your name. I know she will be very grateful.

Hospitals are businesses. Businesses exist to make money. Is denying services ethical? We know it's not. But for the hospital it is saving the cost of a procedeure that is overinflated in cost from being given away in their estimation to someone who can more than likely never pay it back.

Hospitals in the past were tied to christian organazations and operated in a more charitable way. Businesses have no sence of charity, morality or common good. That is why we cannot look to goverments and businesses to right the wrongs and give with love, only individual people who care can make a difference.

I suppose that depends upon the locality. I deal with hospitals on a near daily basis due to my work. Some hospitals are public entities, run by the county, and others are private, run by this or that organization. Some being a business, a university, private or public, and some being the church type. All treat and stabilize any life threatening or emergency condition regardless of ability to pay. Insurance, and payments for follow up treatment and procedures is a whole different aspect.

The problem with Carolyn is that, until she literally collapses from heart failure or goes into septic shock (blood poisoning) from the dissolution of her stomach or intestinal walls, her condition does not yet meet that strict (insurance company-decided) level of "life threatening". Meanwhile, because of her reflux condition and combined with the bulimia (where her stomach acids are eating ulcers into her esophagus and stomach, and vomiting have exacerbated that condition) she wants to get help for the eating disorders, but medically, she is unable to even keep food down because her stomach and esophagus need surgical repair. The hospital keeps turning her away and sending her to a specialist, which of course, wants proof of ability to pay because her insurance company keeps denying the procedure. So she is essentially starving to death. By the time she reaches critical phase to where they HAVE to try to save her, she will have nothing left to even come back.

It's a perfect indictment of the way that profit and money rules the "Health Care" system today. And even though personal charity COULD make a difference in this case, the clock is ticking, and she's still thousands of dollars away from life. Unfortunately, it seems we can't rely on individual charity either, because in truth, it's just a crap shoot as to whether or not you reach enough people and can get the funds you need. If she were in Europe, she wouldn't even be in this position.

I didn't see an option for Paypal. The Help pages on GoFundMe say "Only Certified Charity campaigns created on GoFundMe after November 3, 2016 can accept donations via PayPal. All Personal campaigns, as well as Certified Charity campaigns created prior to November 3, 2016, only accept donations by credit or debit cards."

Not trying to start an argument here, and keeping out of the political aspects of this concept, but... isn't it illegal to deny a patient a lifesaving procedure? I know the laws vary from state to state. But if a person is dying and a medical procedure (non experimental) will save that person, can they legally be denied that procedure?
