Snow....snow...Where have I heard that term before?  Sometime in the past or a news broadcast sometime in the past.

Actually I grew up in N.J. until I was drafted, then went to S.D. Maine, (both about 50 below) and N.D.Shutdown temp. was 98 below).Except for Ark. and Del. spent the rest of my time in S.E.A. and Okinawa, great weather.  Now I'm here in Fl.  This morning about 61.  Maybe you shgould move down to Orlando, still plenty of room in Florida.

I'm with you Bish, I love the fall/winter. The cooler the better. There are a lot of people who get depressed during this time of year.

Opened the window's to my model shop trhis morning and it's still only 79 in there, so I might be able to glue one or two part's together....... before I go runnin for the duck pool !

I used to get that way regularly over the last five years, but I feel different this year and enjoying the first cold snap so far, though I can't quantify why that is. I got to the point that I'd count down to winter solstice in hopes the days would start growing longer. Bish, as far as the holiday, a lot of folks in retail feel the same way!

I love Oct through Dec. The air is getting cooler, everything changes colors and I still enjoy Christmas although I can't decorate like I used to. I wish the winter would end in Feb because by that time it starts getting old, but I could move south, so I deal with it.

Nope, my favorite time of year, and on Dec 21st the days start getting longer.

You may had some depression due to the shorter days. While I was stationed in Alaska we needed to install full spectrum lighting to counteract the lack of sunlight. That may help.

Hello everybody!

armor 2.0 - it's probably the lack of sunlight hurting you. But not only, that would be too easy! Try going for walks at daylight, that might help - although I realize that in the US going for walks is mighty exotic hobby.

Maybe this link can cheer you up a little - I count on your professional opinnion:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/4/t/127400.aspx

Bish - I think I know what you mean. When I was a kid I used to love Christmas - all the presents, excellent food, family meetings - I just loved it.

Nowadays not so much. I stopped getting really nice presents, many people that I loved died, and intead there came the pressure to prepare everything, buy presents and clean everything up. But I could live with that, what annoys me the most are those stupid ads, christmas songs played on the radio over and over and stuff like that. People trying to make money on Christmas are really getting me down.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day

I find I get the " blahs" twice a year, mid January until the first 50* morning, and again in July when the first summer heat really starts to turn up. For some reason after my time in the Navy, two WestPacs, the heat just really makes me mad, absolutely hate 90 days over 70*. I can always put on more clothes, or stay inside when its cold. Really like cool cloudy days.

I hate this time of year!  I dread it with every fiber in my body.  I hate the cold, hate snow, hate the shorter days.  This year is going to particularly rough for me.  Our summer didn't start until like September, when it should start in June.  It rained most of the time, and the temps barely hit 80.  A crappy summer to say the least, and I lost my Dad in August, so this year things just won't be the same.  I'm with you armor 2.0.  I wish I could hibernate like a bear until at least April!

OK. This could get a bit "long winded" so pour yourself a glass of whatever and pull up a chair.

Flashback to 1992. I had just started my 4th model railroad ( I called my R.R. The Demon's Hollow & Pacific. ) At the time I was also building model's for EVERYBODY ELSE ! I made a tidy sum, but I was getting tired of filling everybody's demand's. As a result my own model building fell of sharply. By 2007 I had tripled my price's and they just kept coming !  I was getting depressed and not being able to work on my own stuff was taking a toll on me mentally. In 2010 I gave up building for commission and me and my wife moved to Winnemucca NV. This is when she decided I should continue my railroading and declared that our new ranch would be called Demon's Hollow Asylum. ( A place to get better. )

Well..... The land deal / well driller deal fell apart and we "Bailed out" and ran away to Douglas AZ. now our new place is called Demon's Hollow Asylum, and our motto is...

                                            Were all better now.

My wife thought my model railroad stuff was " cute" and figured my RR name made for a good name for a ranch so Demon's hollow it was . Once the house stuff is delt with she wants me to build an outdoor railroad to continue my "Therapy " Just like the therapy you would get in an asylum ( we were crazy to begin with so no amount of therapy will fix that ! )

We will be putting up a sign over our driveway that read's.

                                      Demon's Hollow Asylum

                                        "Were all better now"

My wife and I are the "Doctor's " and our chicken's , cat's , and dog's are the inmate's / patient's. The chicken's "therapy" start's each day with word association ( what do you think of when I say Worm..... or Chicken Hawk......) The dog's therapy is just a Tennis ball, and the cats all get the occasional mouse. My wife's therapy is building the new house and draining my wallet. L O L !

My therapy is my new modeling shed , my stash of kits- paint's - and scratch building supply's, and planning the Demon's Hollow R.R. right -of-way across our plot of land. ( this will include numerous towns and railway building's all over the place. )

I tried to keep this short..... hope I didn't put any of you to sleep. I could go on and on and on but it's a lot like eating Ice Cream too fast..... I dont want you to get a "Brain Freeze" !

Years ago, I'd get a touch of S.A.D....but I didn't really know it, until Spring hit.

These days, I don't work in the Winter...other than part time/on call at my local airport (graveyard shift, snow duty). I LOVE Winter...it can't get here fast enough and it doesn't last long enough. We're almost a month into archery deer season...although I've been working more than I usually do. I normally shut everything down by mid-Oct and don't fire back up until May. Have only gotten out in the woods a couple times so far...THAT is depressing! Saw a really nice buck yesterday, while I was working in the yard...got me all kinds of fired up!!!

littletimmy - now that's a good story! Thanks a lot & I'm glad I asked! Don't do that railroad too big for starters, so it doesn't overwhelm you. Good luck with your project! And best greetings for your wife!

No,I really enjoy the change of seasons. At this time I really enjoy the onset of cooler fall weather.I really enjoy the snow and cold in the winter, and the heat in the summer. There's even something to be said for a cold rainy day, enjoying a cozy day on the couch watching football. What I don't like is unseasonable weather, let it be what it supposed to be when it supposed to be.

No, just the opposite.  The hot weather has left SanAntonio and we are now entering some real mild days.  The only thing that is depressing about it, is having to go to work on such nice days.

Ok  But the "dead of winter" here is Dec. 28th thru Jan 5th . Then it's 90 deg. till April when it hit's 108 or so untill the end of September. ( That's our Summer.) Then we coast along at 90 untill December again.

Colder the better. Pushes the ducks down and gets the deer moving.

You have to find something for "you" for every season. If you don't have something to look forward to it can be a very long winter (or summer for those who hate the heat)

It sounds like SAD to me too. It kicks in around Oct for many sufferers in the US, a bit later for some. I get it too. It's hard to explain or empathize with by non-sufferers. It is not "in your head", and not a fun thing to deal with.

That said, Pawel mentioned some good tips to deal with it. I take vitamin D Oct-Mar.

And to get off on my little soap box, I believe Daylight Savings Time makes it worse.

Psychological disorder salled SADD.Has to do with brain chemicals and the shorter daylight cycles. Can be treated with meds, special lights or counseling.
