Thanks, Bish for looking. That's a real shame because it shows some of the worst footage (quality wise) and how they restored it. Some of the artillery shots were just black with age with no details visible but look crystal clear after restoration. Just amazing stuff.

Bill, from the looks of it, it does not look like it is. The running time is 99mins and it would be 120 if that extra documentery was on there. But there is an interview with jackson which i guess accounts for the extra 9 mins.

I just read where it's supposed to get re-released here in the States after the New Year in New York and 25 other major markets, so being on BBC America or getting released on disc in the States may be delayed some. Let us know if the 30 minutes of Peter Jackson explaining the process is on the disc. I'm still getting it for my collection regardless.

Bill, i didn't go to watch it at the cinema, but i imagine it would have been on in 3D as well. I am guessing that now its been on the big screen there, it will follow on BBC America pretty soon. Thats how it work here anyway. Picked up my blue ray today so will be wathcing that this weekend.

The one bit of the whole thing that had me in tears was at the end when the guys were taling about the reception they got when they got home. It reminded me very mkuch of Kiplings Tommy and its somthing thats happening again in the UK now.

 

 

While that's not happing as much now, and I don't know about the guys from the Great War, it was happing for our guys after WWII, Korea and especially the Nam.

 

I've heard some stories recently about guys not puting there service on job applications and getting more responses than when they did. Ever since support for the forces grew in 2002/3 i was cynical about it and this doesn't surprise me.

But i was surprised to hear that it happened about the great war. Though i shouldn't have been.

Saw it at the Arclight in Los Angeles in 3D and it is brilliant.  The frank depictions of the carnage were sobering-hard to imagine how the public was kept in the dark about the real conditions in the trenches for the entire war, but it was a different time.

The December 17th showings here in the Columbus area were mostly sold out. When I ordered the tickets for yesterday's 4 pm show on Monday, all the 1 pm shows were showing near full and half the 4 pm shows showed the same. We went early to try and get a good seat and still had to sit so close to the screen we were looking up, the theater was packed 30 minutes before the show. If nothing else, a short run of a couple of weeks would have been nice. I had to take vacation to see it. Worth it but would have liked more options as to time and day.

Glad you guys got to see it. Bill, that 30 min bit you talk about was shown seperatly on the BBC in the week before rememberance day. I didn't know until seeing that that he had a museum and such a huge collection. It was amazing seeing how they got the colours of uniforms and bit of equipment all from his own collection.

Dang it, I wish they would stop doing that. We left during the credits so we could get out. I was wearing my mask (transplant recipient I need to wear it in with large enclosed crowds) and wanted to leave the crowd and get that darn thing off. If I had known I would have stayed. I guess I'll have to watch it when it comes out on the TV.

I agree with you Danddyman, one may see some pictures of the war but Mr Jackson really brought it to life and made it real. I couldn't imagine the hell of living in a trench.

The last 30 minutes was Peter Jackson talking about the project, The 2 men that were shown at the beginning of the credits, both killed during the war, the first one, is related to Jackson in some way and the other is related to the other producer of the documentary, if I remember correctly.

He talks about the parties involved with the production of the film. They showed footage that wasn't in the film and showed some of the process that went into normalizing the speed. They showed some of his collection of uniforms and artillery pieces. The showed the sound process (the foley artists at work). He talked about the sound and the music. They tried to determine which unit was being shown on screen and then got actors from that part of the UK to do the voice work after lip readers  determined what the soldiers were saying. Of course the narration came from 600 hours of interviews with veterans from WWI done by the BBC in the 70's and 80's. He visited Belgium so he could take pictures to get the grass and dirt colors right. He also talked about the closing song over the credits and how it was sung by some of the staff from the British embassy in NZ. 

I hope I'm not spoiling it for you if it comes out on DVD/BluRay but it was worth the wait. While I can't say that I know how you feel about the mask, I remember what we went through when my wife was having her chemo treatments 5 years ago for breat cancer. It was rough but we managed and are all the stronger for it. 

My wife was looking over my shoulder and suggested that you might be able to find it on the BBC website or on You Tube. 

Hope your recovery is going well and that you had a great Christmas and that the coming New Year brings only great things your way.

Just got home from seeing They Shall Not Grow Old in 3D.

I watched it with my wife and daughter. There are no words to accurately describe how we feel after seeing this documentary. We were totally blown away. The film, the sound, THE COLOR, ALL. IN. 3D. 

WOW, OMG, Totally Awesome!!! It was well worth the money! The before picture stuff was all related to the film. Pictures, questions with answers and a plug for the WWI memorial. And the 30 minutes after the credits was icing on the cake. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD/BluRay. 

I just got word my sister is going to see it tonight where she lives in Maryland. Lucky girl! LOL!!!

Seems i missed the release date last Mon and i didn't see it when i went into HMV on Fri or i would have got it. Thanks for the heads up Nino, think i will grab that next weekend. A month after it was on TV is very quick, i imagine it will be on DVD release there next month.

Not directly connected but on a similar theme, a charity in Canada has colourised 150 WW1 photos to be published in a book and also to tour around the country next year. Looking at the examples here, they have done a very nice job on these.

It looks like it's playing at all the AMC theaters here in the Columbus area on those dates. Now I have to figure out which day to take off to see it. My wife, daughter and I just watched the trailer and can't wait to see it. Beats anything Ted Turner ever did by a mile.

It just seemed a bt of a coincedance. So i went to their site and in the About Us section, Peter is listed as the owner. I knew his film company was called Wingnut films, but it was only when i saw it last night that i woundered if there was a connection.

     Thanks for the tip on the BBC presentation of Jacksons WW1 endeavor.  Anyone who catches a listing for it on this side of the Atlantic, please post it.

    I just caught a good bit of the 1919 movie of the Lost Battalion.   Many of the actual Vets were involved in the production. Quite a movie. It was mentioned in the commentary that it was filmed in the actual "pocket" the Battalion was trapped in.

And the making of was really good. I knew jackson had a large collection of WW1 replica aircraft, but he also opened a museum and has a huge collection of WW! memrobilia including uniforms and guns. They used these to get the colours and the sounds effects. He is also a model builder and i have only just tonight put 2 and 2 together and realised he is the owner of Wingnut wings.

In the documentory he said that tehse guys spent 4 years fighting that war, the least he could do was take 4 years out from making movies and work on this.

I had already shead a few tears yesterday, but at the end of that, listening to the accounts of what happened when they got home, i was in floods of tears. Very moving. There is one American vet talking as well as Ozzies, Candians and so on.

Now about to watch a 30min programme about how they did it.

I'm very much looking forward to it. Even my brother, who knows little about any war subject, was aware of it and wanted to watch it. He was amazed that it was not showing here yesterday. The US did have very little envolvement in that war but the day was about the ending of WW1 as a whole. You chaps and the French carried the lions share of the victory.

Watched it last night. The most amazing piece of television i have ever seen. If you get the chance, you can't miss this. For me, it was the voices that have been given to the men on the screen, it was so well dubbed and the forces were perfect, and with the vetrens talking over the top as well.
