I think I am much like the both of you in that before I even purchase another model I begin thinking of the theme, kit size, after market items, accuracy or fantasy build, colors for a certian period, decals, etc.
I am one who likes to scratch bilt a little on almost every kit I put together. While I am not a rivet counter, I do like to add details above what is supplied in the kit (I want to make it unique). During these moments my mind wanders during the research, what to add, the materials or methods to be used, the desired outcome, and all.
I think my current build is a good case and point. I am building a 1/48 Comanche stealth helicopter. Since they were cancelled during development/testing all we have to go on is thier ptototype information. I wanted to build a "what if" production version. Because there never was a production version my mind could wander and brainstorm on the production details, camouflage, colors, cockpit, armament, etc.
In todays modeling marketplace we have countless after market suppliers in metal, resin, decals, paints, you name it. Just picking a modeling subject and letting your thoughts flow will have you thinking of many different variants or what-if's.
To me wandering or brainstorming is a wonderful yet fun way to come up with creative ideas, techniques, outcomes, etc. There is nothing wrong with building out of box in any way ( I enjoy that method too), but I often find I can both challenge as well as reward myself more when I let my creative thoughts wander.
