I think I am much like the both of you in that before I even purchase another model I begin thinking of the theme, kit size, after market items, accuracy or fantasy build, colors for a certian period, decals, etc.

I am one who likes to scratch bilt a little on almost every kit I put together. While I am not a rivet counter, I do like to add details above what is supplied in the kit (I want to make it unique). During these moments my mind wanders during the research, what to add, the materials or methods to be used, the desired outcome, and all.

I think my current build is a good case and point. I am building a 1/48 Comanche stealth helicopter. Since they were cancelled during development/testing all we have to go on is thier ptototype information. I wanted to build a "what if" production version. Because there never was a production version my mind could wander and brainstorm on the production details, camouflage, colors, cockpit, armament, etc.

In todays modeling marketplace we have countless after market suppliers in metal, resin, decals, paints, you name it. Just picking a modeling subject and letting your thoughts flow will have you thinking of many different variants or what-if's.

To me wandering or brainstorming is a wonderful yet fun way to come up with creative ideas, techniques, outcomes, etc. There is nothing wrong with building out of box in any way ( I enjoy that method too), but I often find I can both challenge as well as reward myself more when I let my creative thoughts wander.

Hiya Mate!

      One thing I miss.We would do oil spill drills once a month in Suisun Bay. The trip down just cruisin the water and feeling the force of the boat moving through the water calmed me mind. Then when I got home The ole' Grey Cells were clear and it was "Bobs's Yer Uncle" as far as models were concerned!

TB, I too let my mind wander. It often wanders down the track of - when I am ever going to get a particular model finished?, of how the hell am I ever going to get even a small part of my stash built?, of when will my models look as good as the ones in FSM?..........

Seriously though, I know what you're saying. Sometimes I will look at a model and wonder how I can do that something interesting that will make it different, and that takes my mind wandering down interesting pathways.

Hi Ya'll;

      Have you just ever let your mind wander? About the Models you've built, How well they did or didn't go together, and how the aftermarket and provided parts affected the build? It's interesting to think about it. For instance, as you know I Scratch-Build more than just Tankers

    Hobby shop owners in the past have wondered why I bought two Diesel truck Models and one Boat! Explaining that the truck parts would find their way into a converted(From single engine boat with one engine, to two engines in a  workboat to a Yacht!) Until, I brought the finished conversion back for display, they couldn't figure out my thinking.

       Now this is also prevelant in much of what we see, I think. Modern Armor Builders constantly surprise me with their inventiveness. My adventure with Fruil-Model tracks on a 1/35 " Dickermax" is proof of that. Me building a Self Propelled 105M.M. Gun?That's like JERRY getting caught for good by TOM ! Omigosh, I have been having fun Doing the things I see. One teensy step at a time!

    Now, Sci-Fi and Figures gets some of my time too. How, I think long and hard about the painting and presentation. I am not that proficient in those genres. But I still enjoy letting my mind wander to come to a decision about how they should look!

     Try wandering once in a while!
