Didn't they also issue torture-type vignettes, like "The Pendulum of Death"?

Rob Gronovius

I loved those kits. I built many of the ones that came with optional glow in the dark parts. I remember building Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera, Creature of the Black Lagoon and Dr. Jekell/Mr. Hyde. My main love at the time were the Aurora prehistoric scene kits. I had almost all of those kits.

I don't recall any odor though.

Yeah, I had the Mummy with the glow in the dark parts. I also had a Cornelius from the Planet of the Apes. Great memories.

I know exactly what you mean.  I have some original Aurora monsters and some glows.  That heady, plastic smell is unique to them.  It may have been the coloring chips used in the molding, or something to do with the manufacture of the boxes.  Whichever, it is a signiture of the real thing.

I bought the Aurora Styracosuarus in 1973, and yes the plastic did smell a bit funny compared to the more familiar Airfix, Frog and (burgeoning) Matchbox!

As dinosaurs shared my affection in equal measure with aircraft, my grandparents bought me the glow-in-the-dark Godzilla - it scared the biscuits out of me, so much so that we had to trade it with a friend for an Airfix Short Stirling!

Irony is, some 30 years later I got sucked into the whole kaiju eiga thing and ended writing about Godzilla and doing stuff for TV and radio about him - at which point I wished I'd kept the kit!

I don't remember the smell, but I was just getting into building models at the time and was pretty young. I still have all of them except the wolfman. If I remember right, the wolfman died in a terrible explosion. A blackcat fire cracker. I was lucky in that my Mom saved the rest of them for me when I joined the Marines. Why she saved these particular models, I don't know, but I am very greatful that she did. Thanks Mom.

I price these on ebay every now and then. Black Eye [B)]

Too much for my blood.

I wish i would have had the foresight to store a few of these away when I was a kid. But, hey, when your a kid you just dont care. Much more fun to build than leave in a closet.

I've never built an old Aurora kit, but I definitely understand where you're coming from about specific smells.  Testors enamel, after it has dried, has a distinct smell that I love, probably because it still smells the same way it did 25 years ago when I was getting into this hobby.

I remember building a couple of kits as a kid - I think they were Aurora.  Does anybody remember one of Tarzan standing on a dead lion with a knife sticking out of it?

Another one I seem to remmber was that of an American soldier carrying an M-16 in the jungle.

Were these Aurora kits?

See, people, I suspect he was being 'poetic', 'taking license,' etc. He was resurrecting a good memory from the past and associating youthful, sharp-edged senses with it.

He meant those kits had "cachet."

What young man wouldnt go goo-goo over monsters and guillotines and vampires? Heck, I did. I still snag them whenever I can and have the Mummy on the bench now. That smell would surely stay with you under those halcyon circumstances.....

Then again, it just might have been some vile, eco-disaster chemical. Who knew, back then?

Cheers, David

I do remember the odor of models but don't think it was the monster ones.

I also remember the smell of enamel paint. I kept all my paint supplies in a small suitcase looking cosmetic case. Ah, the aroma when I would open the case.

I was was thinking about the ole Golden Hind last week!

I remember getting the Hind several times. Never did finish one!

Back in my day models were a default gift for preteen/early teen boys.

Wow! This thread brings back some memories!! I don't recall the smell either - but might if I smelled it today; smell is a strong memory trigger. But I recall building the Creature from the Black Lagoon as a kid, along with the dino's mentioned above.

Anyone else build the small plastic sailing ships back then too? Like the Golden Hind, etc...

Cheers!

Hmm, don't remember the smell, but like the other posters, yes, I remember those kits fondly.  Between me and my brother, we had almost all of them.  I built both versions of Godzilla and King Kong, the regular ones, and the ones with the glow-in-the-dark pieces.  We also had Dracula, Frankenstein, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Phantom of the Opera, and I think some more.  Aurora kits were the best, that was just plain modeling fun!

I built the Polar Lights issue of Godzilla earlier this year; I just posted pics of it in this forum (see "What I finished in 2008").  I enjoyed as much this time around, as I did back then.

Great topic!

Don't remember the smell but sure do the kits. They were among my first kits built. And when I got back into the hobby a few years ago, I built Aurora's Creature from the Black Lagoon as a test subject. Every now and then I place it prominently on the living room mantle just to irritate the wife.

I don't remember the smell from those kits, but I distinctly remember the smell of the old Duco cement that I used to build them.

I also remember all the time I spent holding the glow-in-the-dark parts under a light then going into my closet to view them.

Yuup, built those when they first came out in the early 60's but don't associate any smell withthem.

Any modelers old enough to build this line of kits, while in their original issue remember the intoxicating aroma to issue from the just opened box?.  I don't know if it was molld release or the chemestry of their styrene, I just know I had to open it and get a big hit of creature model. I do not remember the smell coming from any other kit including the reissues by Northern lights, just first run Aurrora's.
