Not to hijack here, but, Rob, Ft. Lv. eh! I lived on Buckner Ave (across from Hoge bks)from 85-89 then up on Pope from 91-93. Worked at Subway right outside the main gate 93-95. Did a bit of flying out of the airfield there when I went back in 00-03. Guess it took me 3 times of livin there to realize it was worthLeavin!

When I first started using eBay in the fall of 1996 (I remember returning from staff school at Ft. Leavenworth in Nov, right after Halloween), it was slim pickings as well. I looked at every single model kit up for auction, and it took less than an hour.

My first purchase was the original Tamiya M1 that I kitbashed with the later Tamiya M1A1 to make an accurate (accurate enough for me) M1IP. Still have that kit buried in a box somewhere.

Bottom line is if you get the word out and enough model builders try it, then it may succeed. One of the benefits to eBay though is that they become the "merchant of record" for purchases made thru Pay Pal. If you don't get your merchandise, they go after the seller for the money.

I bookmarked it for future reference, but it's pretty slim pickin's...  So far, I've never been burned on Ebay though, either as a buyer or a seller (I don't sell kits though, I sell militaria to finance my kit-buying)...

In fact, if the winning bidder don't pay me, they don't get the stuff, and I just re-list it...  I didn't have any issue with Ebay doin' the "PayPal only" thing either, as that was the only way I ever accepted payment anyway... Buying kits on Ebay, well... I'm not necessarily looking for a kit that retails for 50.00 bucks and grabbing it for 10.00, but rather finding the kits that are no longer in production, like many of the Monogram and Revell kits from the 60's, 70's, & 80's and the 70's/80's Tamiya & Testor's/Italeri kits.

Part of my hope was that people who aren't into fantasy kits will start selling there as well. It's totally free and your listing won't get buried. Opening bids there now range from a penny to about $150.

But obviously your choice, folks. If you're delighted with eBay, then there's no reason to give anything else a shot. I hope you'll at least check back from time to time to see if your evaluation changes.

Nothing there of interest to me, and the prices look to be retail anyway.

Sorry, but not much variety. If your into monsters, you're golden.

EBay has changed some policies to reach out to their original customers, folks like you or me who just want to get rid of an item or clean out the closet. You can list 5 items for free every 30 days. Any more and I guess eBay assumes you are a business using their site as your online webstore. Those are the folks who have powered eBay into the money making giant they are today. They are also the same folks who clutter up the true deals with their hundreds of items that are sold at MSRP.

I took a look at it. Looks like the Sci-Fi genre is well repreented there but not much else.

I agree that eBay could use some competition, but it'll never happen, IMO, on the level that eBay does. It's too big. The best you can do is address eBay and try to get them to change their policies, IMO.

Hmmm ... I wonder what the etiquette is for new guys jumping in like this. Guess I'll just go for it, with the promise right off the top that I'm not here as a salesman. I loved models as a kid and have been involved as an adult since late 2001.

I listed two things on eBay recently. I wasn't allowed to let buyers pay with money orders (unless I was willing to cheat, which I was). I paid so much in fees that my small profits were eaten up. One bidder didn't pay, didn't communicate. I'm not allowed to leave negative feedback and I'm waiting for the non-paying bidder process to wrap up so I can sell the model to someone else.

EBAY NEEDS COMPETITION.

Has anyone else here tried Hobby-Bid yet? It's a nice alternative now about a month old, started up by a hobbyist. No fees to list or sell. It doesn't draw eBay's traffic, of course, but that means it's a better place to list many garage kits.

I've sold a kit there and have a few more listed. Also bought some Dremel bits. Some things could be improved, but I'm confident they will be if it gains a foothold.

Etsy has proved it's possible to chip away at eBay's monopoly by providing buyers and sellers of many crafts an alternative. It could happen again.

Just for the record, I'm not affiliated with Hobby-Bid. I'm just an aggravated former eBay seller who decided to spend a chunk of his online time this Labor Day weekend cheerleading for an alternative. I hope folks here will at least keep an eye on it and see if it becomes something they can use.
