How do we know who is who?
Posted by Watchmann on Monday, October 19, 2009 7:38 PM

Hi everyone...

A few months back, there was a short discussion, posted by fox, on how we can recognize each other when we attend modeling conventions, contest, etc..

/forums/1144917/ShowPost.aspx

Fox suggested a T-Shirt, and Kelly Shaw said that they would consider it.  I suggested that if making a T-Shirt was too expensive for them, then maybe FSM staff come up with a badge that we could download and edit. Neither Mr. Shaw or Mr. Usher commented on my idea Boohoo [BH], so I decided to make my own.

Here it is...

If you have any suggestions, comments or criticisms, please discuss.

I created it in Open Office, so if any of you would like the file to edit for yourselves, please send me a PM with an email address!

All the best,
m@

Hi Watchmann,

Just read the above post and haven't stopped laughing since. The line under Modeler is terrific. I think your idea is just great. A bunch of guys went to JerseyCon this past weekend and didn't get to meet one another. They even talked about meeting at a certain time and place. I have a question for you. At my age, I'm a little slow so what would be placed in the "Title" line?

I would love to have a copy of the file. My e-mail address is jimmc25@verizon.net

I hope they don't mind us using it. It won't cost them anything.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to make this up.

    Take Care.

Not to be PC or anything, but the line under the mag's name could be a problem for FSM. I'm in the age group where huffing glue started to be a problem with kids. Back then, most LHS wouldn't even sell glue to kids without their parents being with them.

Other than that though I think it's a fantastic idea. I'd love to meet up with some of you glue sniffing, plastic-a-holic nerds! Big Smile [:D]

What if we didn't hide behind an alias? Then there wouldn't be a need for special decoder badges so one could recognize who's who at events. My IPMS name badge has served me well. Between it and a shirt bearing my logo...I'm easy to spot.

Hi guys,

cwalker3 - I thought that the line was funny as we all grew up smelling the stuff but I planned to change it on my copy of the badge to the line used by FSM.

Hawkeye - There are not many on the forum who use their real names. Most sign off with their first names though. There are only 2 that I know by sight, as we invited each other to meet for dinner at a Diner. There are also not too many who have IPMS badges (or badges of any kind), or shirts with their logo that is recognizable to all (no offense intended). That is why I originally brought up the idea of T-shirts or BB hats. I like cwalker3s idea of the badge because it has our Forum name AND our real names on it. How many guys would recognize me if I had a badge with only my real name on it? I realize that we can check for each others real names by going to the profile, but how many do you think do it?

I think cwalker3 and I have tried in our own ways to come up with something that would be easily recognized at any Air Show, Model Show or any other event we go to. I do have to admit that his ID badge is really the cheapest and easiest way to go.

Hi guys!

I'm glad you liked it fox!  I'll send you a copy of the file when I get home tonight.  I really wasn't sure what to put on the badge, so I just made some stuff up, so we wouldn't have to use the "title" line at all.  If you, or anybody, has some suggestions to change it to, then I'd be happy to make those edits.

cwalker3, I don't have any intention on going to a meet with that line on my badge either. Big Smile [:D]  My intent for that line was to hopefully get the FSM staff to actually come up with an official badge.  With Adobe Acrobat, they could make a badge that is form fillable, post it for download, then we could easily print out the badges for ourselves.

When I'm at a convention, Hawkeye, my eyes don't seem to look higher than table level, so even with a badge, t-shirt or logo I don't think I cound find you or any other forum member!   This whole thing could be a moot point for me.  Laugh [(-D]

I think the guys at FSM have more to do than design badges. This should be volunteer duty.

Maybe we need some large gaudy belt buckles, since as you say you never look up from table level. LOL

I know that at various events guys will pick a specific colored shirt to wear so they can recognize each other. Works fine as long as there aren't others doing the same thing. Someone suggested once that a group of us wear Hawaiian shirts...well they were extremely popular that year...everyone else seemed to be wearing them too.

Hello o/

Jim, check your email for the file.

Dubau, thanks for the support :)

Yeah, I gather that the staff of FSM are pretty busy, Hawkeye.  It only took me about an hour to put the badge together with a software package that I had never used before.  I imagine most of the time required for them to make a badge would be in the meetings and design process. Since I came up with one design, I'd be happy to volunteer for the duty, especially if they buy me a copy of Adobe! *rubs hands together*

Adobe is available on a few workstations where I work.  Maybe I could find some time after hours to put in a bit of stick time to make a good one.

There are probably forum members here and from other places that would be embarrassed if fellow modelers knew who they were. We've all probably talked to a "Bud" at the show but didn't know he was "Butthead123" at such and such forum.

always get recognized at shows and people will walk up to me and start talking like we were long lost friends. Problem is, they rarely initially identify themselves so I don't know they are "Modelbuilder99" from the forum. I always have to ask, "who are you and where do I know you from?"

Watchman, the badge is a good idea, but I think the predominant image on it should be the person's avatar.

Most of the time, when reading a thread I know who's in it just by glancing at the avatars.  And under the avatar, it should be their screen name, followed by their real name.  It'll make identification a whole lot easier.

I think a badge is a good idea.  Its really needed because while we might know someone great on the forum, we have no idea what they look like aside from a few, like rob whos pic is in his avitar, or karl who cant help but show his face in EVERY PHOTO.

I know at jersey con I missed quite a few people, just ran into swinger and Marc(wingnut) and I had met him before so I knew what he looked like.

The badge is a GREAT Idea and so is the cap. I wear baseball caps all the time. And to add your avatar is a Good add on.

If anyone gets anything together let me know.

And Rob, I am Bud .................... Whistling [:-^]

Have a GREAT Day all

Well said Rob. Shoot I might get punched if they knew who I was. Laugh [(-D]

Exactly what I'm talkin' about.  I'd just make the avatar photo larger so it's more recognizable.  But otherwise, that's it.

Hi everyone,

I finally got some time to work on the Con Badge in Acrobat Pro.  I've got a version that you can use Acrobat Reader to enter your forum name, real name, and import an image for the avatar.  Just convo me with your email address and I'll send it to ya!

My first thought looking at that badge was there are way too many frickin' names on it--get rid of the last two and just have "Real" and "Forums" name.

I look a lot like my avatar pic, except I am now 65 years older...that pic was taken in 1944...

Thanks for the input, karl, but if you had taken the time to read the rest of the thread, you would have noticed that I had already made those changes.

My oversight, Watchmann! Sorry to have missed that, and good call! Smile
