Resin? What is it?
Posted by johnnyrockets on Saturday, January 2, 2010 8:22 PM

I have heard mention of resin, but what is it and what do most people do with it?

Thanks!

Resin. Well it is a material much like plastic that can be used to cast and copy shapes. Modelers make Master Patterns of items such as cockpits, fuel tanks, bombs and wheels. Then using the master they create a mold. Once the mold is ready they fill it with resin to cast a duplicate of the master.

Aftermarket companies make all kinds of goodies to improve models. Whether it be a more accurate tire and wheel assembly for a F-14 or the ejection seats inside the cockpit tub.

Got it!

Very cool!  So for specialty parts and one of a kind parts, this is the stuff to use!  Cool!

Thanks for the great info.

You can also get supplies to make resin parts at home.  I'm using the stuff to add cockpit details to an old AMT Millennium Falcon kit ( 2 more seats from a YF-23 kit and "dashboard" copied from one of the exterior parts from the Falcon ).

While you want to avoid copyright issues and not sell such copied parts, it can be handy for making replacements for lost or broken parts from a second kit without wasting the rest of the spare kit or making a master from something like plasticine to mold and cast in resin to add detail that can be glued onto a model.
