Model Magazines? Best Ones?
Posted by johnnyrockets on Monday, January 4, 2010 11:36 AM

Hi all,

Currently, I subscribe to FSM, Scale Auto and am a member of IPMS.

I can't get enough of modeling!  Or reading about it!  Big Smile

Are there any other magazines that you would recommend?  Yes

Well obviously this one, and I consider the IPMS journal as good as any magazine out there. I see you mentioned SA so assume you like cars too, Model Cars Magazine is a good one.

Other than that you hit my regulars.

I'll also pick up the occasional model railroad magazine, as they tend to have some good stuff on dioramas and the ads have some companies that only target model railroaders but have stuff useful for other kinds of models.

The railroad magazine Klambach (same guys that do FSM, SA) is pretty good, I forget the name but I think its just Model Railroader or close to that.

Just my opinion I did get Model Car mag did not like it one bit.  Reader feed back was very little.  The editor has this obsession with the Ferrari company every issue had something to do with that car.  The mag has a lot of shine not much info.  Just my two cents.

I'll pick up a copy of Model Railroader at the newstand 3-4 times a year.  It always seems to have articles about techniques that are applicable to other forms of modeling.

I used to subscribe to Car Modeler but dropped it a few years ago.  I'll still buy one occasionally if there is an article that grabs my interest.

Fair enough, I've met Gregg at several shows and admit I may have some bias towards the magazine due to his obvious passion for the hobby.

It is just nice to see someone in the magazine business who clearly does it because of interest and not just as a business opportunity. I don't mean that to be a slam on other magazines, but my interaction with other magazine people at shows has been very cool, and kind of formal, Gregg seems honestly interested in meeting the readers and talking models.

Ditto and all three of the Tamiya Model Mags are good as well...aircraft, international and armor...

I used to subscribe to all three of the Tamiya Model mags, they just got a little pricey because of international shipping.  All three are quite good however and I still pick up the occasional issue at my LHS.

Yeah, you're all sure right about the pricey-ness of some of the mags...  The international shipping is killer!

But they sure are cool!

I noticed that some hobby websites offer "bundles" of mags from Europe, etc. which creates a pretty cool deal.

Thanks all!

I get 2 of the Tamiya mags also, but I don't have any subscriptions.  I buy mine from www.squadron.com .
They carry all of the magazines everyone has mentioned so far plus Many others.

My suggestion is you get on Squadron's monthly catalog mailing list.  Every catalog has a large section in it offering the latest issues (and back issues too) of magazines from America AND England/Europe.
They sell magazine bundels (value packs) also.

I like a couple of Brit magazines, Model Airplane International and Scale Aviator Modeler International. Don't buy them all the time, they're a little pricey, but they usually have some nice buildups and reviews. Books A Million carries them around here.

Though Finescale Modeler will always be my #1 recommendation, I can tell you that one of the magazines in which I learned the most about advanced Armor weathering techniques was "Armor" published in Spain, I believe? You can get it through Squadron--HIGHLY recommended, if Armor is your thing.
