Big bookcases covered with clear vinyl to keep the dust out.

In all my years of modeling, I've gotten rid of maybe 10 out of maybe 300 built?

Ichitoe

i'm contemplating getting back into the hobby after a 15+ yr hiatus, and one of my hesitations is what to do with the models once done.  i have very little space to display them.  i dug out the box with my modeling stuff i've been hauling around for 15 yrs (surpirsed i still have it!)  and i found the following unbuilt kits (all 1/48):

Hasegawa F14D
Hasegawa F15E
Hasegawa F16C (2 of these)
Hasegawa F4G
Tamiya A10A
Monogram A6E
Monogram EA6B
Monogram MIG29
Monogram AV8B
Testors F117A
Italeri Tornado IDS

i guess i could build some shelving for displaying......

thanks all for your replies!

Looks like you have some kits to play with.  I say start to build and see if you enjoy the experience.  The rest will take care of itself.

Personally, I display some at home and my office.

Most of my completed models are stored in boxes in a closet.  I currently have limited display space, so I'll rotate what have out on display.

Occasionally I'll purge some old models, but have kept most of my contest winners and others with sentimental value.  I have some that are +20 years old.

My finished models go on the shelf. All of the armor that I build goes in a dio, and then on the shelf. The aircraft go on the shelf with a little tag saying what the plane is.

The finished ones that don't come out good are used as paint testers.

Mine go in the home office/study. Got two "Billy" bookcases from Ikea in there with glass doors. Just bought some glass shelves, too. Depending on the plane, I can probably fit 3-5 1/48 WWII fighters per shelf.

Since I've only completed two since starting up again, space isn't a problem yet.

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

I have next to no display space, until I finish some remodeling projects on my house, which include adding built-in bookcases in my living room, converting a spare bedroom upstairs into my display room, and re-finishing the basement into a bar and eating area, with display space for my models and my collection of ovre 200 beer steins and mugs.

Of course, all of the time spent at the bench is time not spent finishing the remodeling projects, so I'm limited to displaying one 1/72 aircraft (an Fw-190) and one 1/48 aircraft (my Monogram P-47D).  And toy soldiers are stuck in some bookcases and display cases on end tables and my phone stand.

I really have to get back to the remodeling...

robtmelvin

I display mine in my office.  My office decor is WW 2 oriented, the famous photo of the flag raising at Iwo is above and behind my desk chair, signed photos of Col. Tibbets with the Enola Gay, a signed photo of the first B-25 off the Hornet's deck on the Doolittle Raid (signed by the co-pilot) and a signed print of the Memphis Belle signed by Col. Morgan, the co-pilot and one of the waist gunners, who I met at an air show north of Memphis, TN., a few years ago.  Also a 1/20 scale RC P.T. 109 on my windowsill.  Gets a lot of my clients talking and a great place to display my handiwork.

That is really great,I wish I had my own office to display a few pieces. However, one must be careful of running afoul of the PC Police.Perhaps someone might think I'm violent or a threat because of the tank or plane I might have,or they might be offended by the swatizka on a plane or tank.

Mostly now I just photograph them and tear them down, or box them up... A select few get displayed for a spell... My completed Bill Mauldin dios  are permanent though... I love those ones, even if 99% of my visitors don't get military humor. How can you NOT get:

                                                                             "Thanks..."

and:

Due to having three cats, the displayed builds don't last long if I don't use the right shelves, and only two of mine are "cat-proof"...

I REALLY wish I had had digital photography going back to about 1974 when I first became a "serious" modeler (Thanks to Monogram's M-48 Patton and Shep Paine's diorama tip sheets)...  I'd have a record of over 2000 built kits and about 500 dioramas...

I am a Builder mostly, that is where I get my satisfaction during the building process.

Not much interested in the finished kits unless it came out especially well.

Enjoying the building process for me also more important than producing Gold medal winning models. I build for my enjoyment have build Gold-medal winners but on average find those builds more stressful than relaxing/enjoyable.

So if a kit is finished it gets added to the shelf and when something better to display comes along things get weeded out and ditched.

What do you do with your finished models?  Donate them (clubs, stores, kids or ?)?  Display them (if so where and/or how)?

I'm getting back into this hobby after a 15+ year hiatus, and one of my concerns will be what to do with the completed models.

Thanks,
Mike
