I was once grazed on the head by a sniper's bullet near Chir Station just southwest of Stalingrad in early '43...later that night, I worked on a wooden model of a glider...wadn't no big thang..

 That does suck, all things considered, coulda been much worse. I worked on a framing crew many years ago in Az. The foreman was walking the top plate, nailing it down as he went. He nailed his foot to the top of the wall!!!!  TWICE!!!! He had to pry on the bottom of his foot, to bring the nails up, then push his foot back down the nails to expose the heads.........(insert barfing smiley here). Another guy on the crew had pinned the guard up on a circular saw, he just finished cutting a piece and stood up, blade still spinning, right into his thigh.....(insert green, passing out smiley here).

When I was green kid, I worked at a trailer manufacturer, and was skinning a trailer with sheet metal and drove a 2" staple through the web between thumb and forefinger of my left hand.

Only to discover that my tool chest was just out of reach, and that the rest of the crew had left for lunch early. I was there for almost an hour before someone came back to help me. Of course it took an extra five minutes while he laughed his @$$ off!

Ps.. years ago, I scratch built a Well Drilling rig for my step dad, while trying the make a U channel from a square box tube, I slashed the fatty part of my thumb nearly off.. it healed ok,, but my right thumb is now wider than my left... seriously..lol..

Ouch!When I was a kid, we had a 6' picket fence in our back yard.  On the other side was one of our neighbor's yards.  One time, we were out in our yard playing when the neighbor's daughters (About our age) started picking on my sister over the fence.  She was only 3 at the time.  I stood up on a large cinder-block so I could look over the fence and the girls on the other side stuck their tongues out at me.  I in return, gave them a good raspberry back.  The cinder block I was standing on picked that exact instant to shift and knock me off it.  I fell straight down.  There was a rusty nail protruding a good 3 inches from the top of the fence's crossbar.  It went straight through my tongue.  To this day, my sense of taste is kind of weak.  If something isn't really salty or sweet, it tastes very bland to me.  I will never forget that.  Ever get stitches in your tongue?  I don't recommend it...  Not to mention the tetanus shot.  Another one was from my Dad.  When he was a teen, he worked in a ladder factory over a summer one year.  He told me that one day he went to work and was happily sawing wood when he saw one of his best friends have a fatal accident.  You see, back then those huge buzz saws didn't have any kind of safety gear.  No cutoffs, no blade guards.  His friend was about to put a board on the saw when he slipped on some sawdust on the flaw and fell down straight over the operating saw.  It cut him in two from head to about mid torso.

I've been quite busy with work and studying for the last 5-6 weeks I haven't accomplished much on any project. This week I finally have time to have some fun and put some time into my F4U-5 I've been eager to finish... and what happens Friday afternoon?

I shoot myself in the finger with a nail gun. I was toe-nailing some roof joists and was adjusting it for level when I went to nail it down with my left hand when the gun double tapped on me. Being a careless idiot I had my right hand holding it right where a misplaced nail would go. I was about an 1/8th of an inch from taking the knuckle and bone out with the top of my finger. As it stands I have a giant superglued gash out of my right index finger that is throbbing and cannot be bent. I can't even hold a hobby knife let alone do fine work.

So let that be a lesson to any weekend warriors out there, construction can be quite nasty if you get complacent, I got really lucky and I've seen a lot worse, falls are terrifying.

As it stands I have a giant superglued gash out of my right index finger that is throbbing and cannot be bent. I can't even hold a hobby knife let alone do fine work.

A little WD-40 could get that finger unstuck in no time! 

Seriously though, yeesh! After the time I've spent around pneumatic tools, welders and plasma cutters, I'm shocked that the worst I've ever done to myself is 1) stab myself in the left index finger with a #11 blade and 2) nick same finger on the blade of a radial arm saw that hadn't quite finished spinning down. Though I did almost get crushed by a rolling Scout II about eight years ago.

On the bright side, at least you wounded yourself with a cool tool. My dad's like the king of lame mishaps. When I was a kid he somehow managed to cut his hand open along his palm from thumb to pinky with a phillips head screwdriver. Then there was the time he stapled his thumb hanging xmas lights. That was a few days after he fell through the attic retrieving said lights and landed smack on the hood of his brand new car...

I'm starting to think I should have had this stitched, but it's too late now anyhow and it really is in an awkward spot. Doesn't hurt anymore, Tylenol is helping. I think I'll give it a few more days but I might actually accomplish some modeling this week. It looks a lot worse than it is.

As long as it doesn't start looking like a left wing defense man from a 1970s Bruins/Redwings game, you should be fine.

Good luck sir, sounds like it could have been much worse.

I also have a couple of scars here and there-two on my left thumb for example. One scar is the result of an attempt to make arrows (age 10)with a linoleum knife, the other a piece of the end of the thumb lost to a meat slicer age 20 or so.

While we were building some special crates during a deployment the nail gun I was using misfired. The safety thingy that has to be pressed against the surface stuck and continued to fire as I just finished shooting a stitch of nails. Took an 8d coated nail through three of my fingers on my left hand. Didn't realize it at first until I went to place the next piece of wood into position and could grab it.

My fingers were nailed tightly together. Had a coworker step on my hand so I could use a pair of vise grips to pull the nail out...that's when it started to really hurt. The plastic like coating on the nail stayed inside. Like a good GI I flushed the holes with alcohol from one of the trucks air brake dryer tanks, wrapped each finger with electricians tape and kept working.

A few months later I nearly cut my fingers off...but that's another incident.

It was about 15 years ago.  Myself and three other officers were in a foot pursuit of a teenage suspect who was fleeing after setting his parents house on fire (burned to the ground) 

we had chased him through several backyards, vaulting over fences etc.  When he came to a canal, he jumped in and started swimming to the other side.  One officer jumped in and started swimming after this kid.  Myself and the other two officers ran across the bridge to meet the kid as he comes out of the water.  Only trouble is he now has a fishing knife in each hand.  Well all three of us drew on this kid, hoping we wouldnt have to shoot a 16 year old. 

 The officer behind him clambers out of the water, pulls a steel star picket out of the ground, and belts this kid square across the shoulder blades.  The kid drops both the knives,  shakes himself like a dog, and keeps on running !  Back across the road, and a headlong dive straight into the river.  Starts swimming out to an island about 100 yeards off the shore.  We commandeer a hire boat and off after him.  Caught up to him and drag him onboard.  Unfortunately, near where the oarlocks fit in to the boat, there is a jagged bit of metal.  Which catches his *** on the way over.  The kid is screaming by this stage, we get him into the boat, only to see blood running down his inner thigh.  When we got his board shorts off, his *** had been ripped open, and one testicle was fully protruding.  Poor kid...wasnt one of us on the boat that didnt feel for him at that moment.  whether his parents ever forgave him is another guess...........

Accident and emergency sewed him up good as new.
