How many impurities are there (really) in tap water that would interfere with paint mixes?? I'd be tempted to give the "free water" a shot & save the expensive stuff for, uhh, drinking!

De-ionized water is more or less the same as distilled water, though distilled water will have zero mineral content. Both should be easily found, check the water aisle at the grocery store. The kind I buy is the local grocery's "Western Family" brand, and was about $1 per 4 liters, which is a tiny bit bigger than the US gallon.

To some extent, one term indicates how it was made (distilled water is made by distillation) and the other indicates what it contains (no ionizable minerals).  I believe for paints, decal applications, etc. it is the ion content that creates the major problem, so deionized water should be pretty good. I would assume most dionized water would not contain much dissolved solids that are not ionizable, but I suppose it could.

Auto supply stores too. It's used for topping off car batteries.

Grocery and drug stores stock it. Just ask the clerk!

Odd, distilled water should be easy to find as it is used for ironing among other things. It does appear that deionized water should work for you though, although it may be more expensive. Apparently it is usually made from distilled water.

As far as I understand, distilled water is recommended over tap water because it doesn't have minerals that can build up in the paint over time.

I use GW paints along with others, I use tap water for clean up and out of the bottle thinning (washes and such), and distilled water for thinning the paint in the bottle when it gets too thick. 

I think it is important to point out distilled and deionized water is not drinking water. A little won't hurt you but, it basically dilutes your body fluids. I have read about health nuts literally killing themselves by drinking gallons of distilled water to cleanse their system and throwing their body chemistry all out of whack. Added just in case you get thirsy at the bench, go to the tap, or grab a bottle of drinking water.
